Well my birthday is coming up in two weeks and I am going to get a cam, but I don’t know which one to get? Any recommendations. 1. Has to be smogable. 2. Going to go into a 331 with performer heads and intake. 3. It’s a street driven car 4. The sound of the cam does not matter. Don’t really care to be able to hear it.
thank you, cesar [ May 20, 2005, 12:11 PM: Message edited by: cees87drop ]

The Trick Flow stage 1 is a good cam. It is smog legal and will make good low/midrange power w/ that motor

All under 200 bucks except for the custom cam. The TFS cam is ~139 and the X is ~189. Pick a cam with your goals in mind. This is one of the trickiest parts of a build Good Luck

TFS Stage one will be too small...go with a custom or XE274HR. That would be a good cam for you.

When I first put the 331 together it had a Lunati cam in there with specs that were pretty clost to a TFS stage 1 and a TFS street heat intake.
After putting in the xe274hr and a track heat intake which flows about the same as your performer intake, the car gained 44rwhp and dropped my et by about 7/10ths. That was also with swapping from a catted x to an o/r x.
Hope that helps with your decision .

I guess you made my decision for me. But smog is really a big deal to me and need to know before I buy it if you have passed smog with it yet. Thanks a lot that was the type of info I was looking for.

Not sure about the smog though... My car won't be driven on the street anymore. Sorry

The best way to know if it is going to pass smog is to get a cam that has a CARB EO number like the E cam or the Stage 1.
However, some cams w/o EO numbers may still pass smog. The best thing to do in this case is to call the cam manufacturer and make sure. If you get a cam that does not pass smog it will be a lot harder to correct than bolting on your smog equipment.
The bottom line is you will be trading performance in order to be emissions legal.

i have the trick flow stage one in my 306 and i love it. you also have to watch out for your piston to valve clearance, especially with the ford x cam. my friend put the x cam in his 302 and bent all of his valves. so with the tfs stage one, has good power and sounds great at idle.
