i have heard nothing bad about art carr, but the only experience i have seen first hand is my friends hatchback, he is on his third lentech aod, the first one had a bum parts in it, had it fix on warranty, the second tranny wasnt put together right by lentech i think, and that one died in 1000 miles, again under warranty, the third one has been in his car for a while, should be alright
he is only running a 302 with H/C/I and a 125 shot i believe, his best time was 11.91 i think, but that was before the tranny, so he isnt pushing the tranny to its limits
just my .02

I have a lentech in mine with a b&m converter, haven't had a problem. I've put about 10,000 miles on it. A friend of mine went through 2 Art Carrs in a stock 5.0.

this is want tu need to remember when u look at these post and decide on a tranny, someone has a horror story for every performance part out there, nothing is perfect, either tranny should work to ur expectations

LENTECH BY FAR, here is why.
first i have a lentech and i love it, i've never had any problems.
Now on to WHY. Art Carr sets up the stock vb so that it shifts at a fixed rpm while under full throttle and they do not recomend shifting manualy because you have to do the "aod shuffle" 1-D-1-D to keep it in second gear. they say shifting back into first gear after putting it in drive puts excess wear on some crap inside the trans and decreases trans life. So they suggest letting them set up the shift points for you and you just leave it in drive.
Now Lentech on the other hand makes their own valve body. Instead of being 1-2/3-4 like a stock/art carr aod, they use a 1-2-3/4 shift pattern which means 1st gear is fist, D is second gear, and OD is 3rd gear AND overdrive. They have an electric switch that keeps it out of overdrive until you want it. Which means when the switch is ON (looking out overdrive) it's like you just have a 3 speed auto. But when you turn the switch off while in third gear, it'll shift into overdrive, and when you turn the switch back on, it downshifts back to 3rd.
Or maybe you can buy a lentech valvebody and have it mailed to art carr for installation. Whoever builds it will do the best job they can (no one is perfect ) but no matter who you have do the work, I suggest using a Lentech valvebody without a doubt.
They also sell a manual vb with a transbrake (normal shift pattern, not reverse) if you want one of those too.

The shuffle is not good for the tranny at all like Chris said above, my AOD with shift kit only lasted 16,000 miles untill it took a crap. But then again I shuffled every race and ran my car every weekend.

I love my lentech AOD and have yet to have one problem W/ it in 10,000 miles Everything Chris said is right!
The only thing the I don't like is when it comes from OD to drive... shifts hard

I had a manual valve body installed on my lentech and for some reason the shift into and out of o/d is much softer now.
