does anyone kno if a 94 thunderbird 4.6 with an auto and a 96-98 mustang GT 4.6 auto tranny is the same

Best way is to check the part numbers. Wouldn't surprise me if the tbird tranny bolts up and works fine, but has weaker internals inside.
