I know this is probably a noobie question but what's the difference and which is better?

I'll give you the short version....
Speed density calculates how much air the motor is sucking in via the pressure in the intake manifold.
Mass Air calculates how much air the motor is sucking in by calculating the *mass* of the air coming in thanks to the mass air meter
Speed density is best for a stock or near stock motor, mass air is more adaptive and can handle mods better.

Cool thanks and I believe my car comes with mass air already since it's a 88 gt.

'88 5.O's designated for California got mass air. If there is only a black tube between your air filter box and throttle body, then you have a speed density 5.O
