I'm thinking of swapping a 5.0 I got from picknpull and swapping it into my ranger. I have all the smog equipment and I'm keeping all the emissions equipment in tac. What do I need to do to get it CA smog legal?

U going to need all smog equipment and a motor the same year or newer than your ranger and you will have to have it BAR'd by a referee

Get a explorer or mountaineer parts truck. Those have all the factory stuff you need.

First off no smog station will touch your car they will send you to a ref and as far as a ref goes they will look at part numbers including your block

My school ARC has bar reffs working out front. Theres always people with there vehicles, Cobra factory five kits modded hondas and etc. There is a guy on here that got an 03 cobra motor swap, got it cleared by a bar so they slapped a bar approved sticker on the door. My engine performance teacher was a BAR for a long time now he works for CARB

Then he can tell you a 93 engine swap in your 94 ranger will not get a new emssion tag from the ref

The explorer swap is good for Rangers of your year because the motor must be from the same year truck or newer. I think the V8 model came out in 97, so you'd just need the BAR ref to sticker it as a 97 Explorer for smog purposes. They will check everything, so have your story straight when you go in to avoid any hassles.
It happens all the time, and there's nothing shady about it.

I'm really familiar with the fox harness, emission, etc I've look under the hood of an explorer and it looks way different than our foxes instead of a distributor it has coil packs.

How different is a 94-95 Mustang harness from a Fox? Those still had distributors and similar emissions to a Fox, right?

You can not put a older engine in a newer car legally. If you could we all would have fox body mustangs 1973 big blocks with carbs registered and driving on the street as smog exempt right cuz 1973 is the last year smog...

I know an excellent loop a 93 fox motor in a 93 ranger. (I want to keep it that ranger body style. Every body style before that is werd looking.)

not true... 1975 is the last year. but even certain vehicles were well into the 1980s without smog. Diesels dont need to be smogged until 97.
