since converting to 5spd from aod I have detonation proplems at stock timining with premium feul. it was not a problem with 18* advance with the aod never did it once. It is a stock motor with bolt-ons just put in a9l didnt help, are there any other reasons for this the advance comes from the ecu right?

Yeah no shit Set the timing at 14 degrees and see if it still detonates. If it does then keep retarding the timing.
Are you running 91 octane?

Did you pull the distributor recently? It sounds like your timing is off.

The distributor was pulled a while back at a shop, is there a way I can tell that it is off by looking at it or how can I test it? thanks for the help I am going crazy.

pull the plug outta number 1 (its the first on the passengers side) and put a pipe cleaner in there, or a straw, and have somebody crank it, when the pipecleaner is at its highest point have them stop and look at the number one position on the dist, if its not pull it out adjust it

You will need a timing light to know for sure what your timing is. In the meantime, are you running 91 gasoline?
