I was just curious if any of you guys knew about differences between charcoal/evap cannisters? My current cannister only has one vacuum port on it and uses a Y splitter to hook up the tank line and the line going back to the intake. Every other cannister I've seen has two separate ports one for each source. My car passed smog, but just barely, so I was thinking this could be the reason?

I noticed that before too when I replaced the front clip on a foxbody I had. My car was a gt and the clip came off of a 4 banger. I forget which one had which. The two ports won't hurt anything. Thats essentially what the y fitting is doing. If you top your gas tank off a lot you could of ruined the canister. I would get a new one if so. Otherwise you got other issues.

What i have been experiencing with these charcoal canisters for smog is the "all" of the evap hose material has aged and is disintegrating. This is a leak and will not or may not pass smog testing. Like i said all pieces of rubber evap hose from the fuel tank forward to the evap canister will need replaced. this also means the piece going to the intake manifold. At that point it also a vacuum leak. Idle will also improve. Smoother!!!

I have already replaced all vacuum lines under my hood. This includes all of the lines going to and from the evap cannister, all lines connected to the vacuum tree, all lines connected to the bottom of the intake manifold, line going to the pcv valve, and any other line that was not a hard plastic line. As for the hard plastic lines I took them all off and vacuum tested them individually to 25in vacuum and they were all fine with no leaks.

the charcoal canister will not affect the readings out the tail pipe. as long as the hoses to the intake are good, if not you basically have a vacuum leak. what were your readings from the test?

I did find a crack in one of the hard lines and repaired it by breaking it completely into two pieces then sliding each side into a rubber vacuum line and zip tying both sides. It was one of the lines coming off of the vacuum solenoids that is part of the Y/check valve that goes to the intake manifold.

I don't remember the exact readings, but I do remember NOX and CO readings were well within range and HC was pretty high. I think at 25mph I would have failed with one more point of HC.
