So we were at Thunder Hill on Saturday and on my dad's 3rd run his instructor told him that there was smoke coming from under the hood. He then looked at the temp gauge and it was tacked out all the way to the $ sign. So who knows how long it was already hot before they seen and smelled it. Unfortunately he just missed the pits and his instructor told him to slow down and keep going that it would cool down. Guess what it didn't, it got worse. So when he arrived back in the pits I checked it out and the radiator cap and radiator it self was ice cold and there was a lot of pressure in the upper hose. So obviously the thermostat failed. I have no idea where the water was coming from but its everywhere. Then I looked under the car and everything is coated in oil. I also have no idea where the oil came from. Where to begin? The motor now has a weird knock coming from the bottom end. I'm far from a expert but I'm pretty sure he cooked the shit out of the motor. Any suggestions?

Is there oil in the motor? How's the oil pressure?

You need to get the car in the air and find the source of the oil, it could be motor oil, power steering fluid, or trans oil. Same goes for the water. Nobody can tell you what's wrong without more information. Get under the car with a light and be prepared to get dirty. Welcome to the world of open tracking, if you want to stick with it you better learn how to diagnose problems and fix them, unless you're rich then just send it to somebody.

BTW, lots of pressure in the hose is possibly a head gasket. If it built up enough pressure it may have cracked your radiator.

Jay...I think the easiest and quickest thing to do right now is drain the oil pan. You should be able to see if there's coolant/water in the oil.

Also, as SFcoupe mentioned, you're radiator can be cracked. This is exactly what I was telling you when we were at the track...you just never know, it really could be smaller than you think (lets hope so!).

Yeah, could be a bunch of things that caused it, but if it has a knock in the bottom end, that's usually bad.

If you lost a lot of oil, my guess is, it probably spun a bearing.

A knock is no good. Drain the oil, pull the filter. Carefully cut it open and let us know what you find. Don't hesitate to call me if you want to chat about it.

Thanks a lot John, PM sent. We are leaning towards starting over & building a 331. I'm also looking for some Aluminum heads C.A.R.B. legal of course Anybody that has parts to offer please send me a PM. We need to get this girl back on the track where she belongs. It's a long shot but I might have a chance of getting a complete 351 from a real 95 Cobra R. Complete from the Cobra 5.8 intake to the oil pan.

Hell yea Jay! Get that complete 351 and throw it in there....you're car will be running hella hard after that swap!

If not, I'd do the stroker build. Definitely stay N/A with a good HCI setup. That thing will need more MM shit to help keep it under control! Next up, panhard bar, torque arm, and coilovers [Whoo Whooooo!]
