Hey,
I'm planning to rebuild a 1994 production 5.0 to handle a turbo. Im on a tight budget, so all factory parts will be reused. I'm also running gt40 o-ringed iron heads w/arp studs.+f303 cam.
Whats Piston ring set do you recommend I buy? Sealed Power Plasma-Moly Piston Ring Sets seem to be reasonable in cost (about $70), But I'd Like you opinions.
What groove sizes should I use for the factory pistons? 2-1.5mm 1-4.0mm ,2-5/64 1-3/16 , 2-1/16 1-3/16,or 2-3/16 1-1/8?
How much should I gap the rings for boost? top .026? second .022? Thanks sorry for all the Q's [ February 19, 2010, 10:09 PM: Message edited by: street_illegal_stang ]

Yeah I go to irwindale once in a while- I rarely race there cause it takes forever to get a run in. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. I get there at 5pm and If i'm lucky I'll get 3 runs by 9:45pm
Anyway, Can you tell me the specifics about the total seal rings your running? you running stock pistons too? What groove size did you select? Total seal classic? or max seal
I hope you say classics cause the max seal ones cost like $280 lol [ February 19, 2010, 09:16 PM: Message edited by: street_illegal_stang ]

Its been 3 years man..i looked through my paperwork couldn't find anything.
But I believe it was the first one down on the page. I have .030 over pistons too. I would call them to make sure.
No worries , thanks for your help. I may go with total seal classic-file to fit rings if I dont find something better for the price. Anyone have any suggestions?

Ok, I did some research. Seems that I'll be fine with a standard cast ring set or ductile iron top ring. Federal hellfire ring set looks like the one to get. As for gap it looks like higher end of factory specs. I'm still not sure on the ring groove depth. I read on a aussie ford forum that a 1994 trw piston uses 1.5mm top and 2nd, and 4.0mm oil. if anyone can verify that correct, please tell me

If the pistons are stock, they are 1.5/1.5/4.0's. Make sure you have an ample fuel system...stock pistons are gonna need plenty to survive under boost. I'd gap the rings on the VERY high side, due to the boost.

Cool, Thanks JohnB!
What do you think if I just went with perfect circle pre gapped rings?...They're cheap compared to the hellfire set. I remember reading that they typically come filed to .028 top, .2nd .024. of course Ill check the gaps before final assembly. My fuel system currently is a 255lph in tank, t-rex inline, bbk regulator,& 42lbs injectors. Its a small 60mm single turbo. I want to run it on pump gas;running a max of 8psi boost. Thanks again [ February 20, 2010, 12:16 PM: Message edited by: street_illegal_stang ]
