If you wanna go 10s on motor that thing better hook, better be light.
As far as the combo I would hope that 331 has some good compression. I think with the right cam/compression and cylinder head you can go 10s on motor with your 331 but that thing will be screaming.
You would have to have nearly 550hp at the flywheel for about 3000 pounds to run high 10s and that is in a perfect world.
I would suggest starting over with a 408 and some appropriate heads or adding nitrous/boost if that is your goal.
With nitrous or boost those performer rpms and the 331 will see 10s.

Lol, Your gonna need to spin 7k with 4:30s and under 3000#s. It can be done. Some guy on the corral made 418rwhp with his 331. 11:1, hi ports, monster cam etc..

the heads will limit you. It can be done with a 331. It has been many times. Alot will depend on how well your car works. I would step up to a Vic JR head if you want to stay a little cheaper. Sell your RPMs to offset the cost, or you could just go run the car how it is and see how it does. It wont be a heavy car [ January 08, 2010, 07:30 PM: Message edited by: 2stangs69-91 ]

Or a Vortech... Even then, good luck getting into the 11s... You will need good fuel delivery.

I ran the same heads on a 347 n/ a with a tfs stage 2 cam and 10.25 to 1 comp ratio and only made 365 hp and 380 tq to the wheels. Now I run the same bottom end with some good machine work a custom cam and afr 185 heads and a Vic 5.0 intake and I run 125 mph trap speeds but the car was 3300 pounds and I wasn't 60 footing where I should be and couldn't get under 11.5. Now I'm going carb and major weight savings to try for that 10.99. Also my performers had a serious port job and bowl work and the afr heads out of the box make so much more power.

I wouldn't pour a bunch of money into stock-type heads. If it were me, I would pick up a set of TFS FAC 190 heads, High Ports or some racy TEA modded heads. Lots of power is made in the heads, and trying to get stock replacement heads to knock your socks off is not going to come cheap.
Stock type heads are great for a street guy who just wants a quick car, maybe into the 11s.

Go with the 408. I didn't even have my 347 all the way done and I bought a 351 block to stroke out. Bigger is always better IMO.

Well of course a 408 would be great. Hell, cut the towers and lay in a 14-1 comp 532" and add a fogger and a plate and...you can go on and on. The point I am trying to make is that a 331 can go 10's on the motor. It will need a well matched combo and a good tune. An off the shelf cam and a set of stock replacement heads is going to disappoint.
Remember that it is the entire combination.
