Just got home from a trip to Reno this weekend. Mustang drove perfect up there and half way home. started to ping around the Sacramento area. It only pings if I accelerate hard or am going up a hill. No ping if just maintaining speed. I did stop for gas right outside of Reno on the way back. Put 89 in the tank (I alway run 89). Any suggestions would be great.

BTW, it's a 93 GT with 137k miles. Got 25mpg on the way up there looks like I got the same on the way home. Also, car ran cool to cold both ways. No pinging in the mountains on the way home.

Thanks for all the replies.... [Frown] Here's an update for those who care....

Cleaned the MAF (even though it didn't show any dirt) and topped off the tank at a local gas station. It doesn't ping anymore. Also, got almost 29mph coming down from Reno.

when you go up in elevation the air gets thinner which leans out the car. I had a problem where I ran 103 octane and the car ran like crap(even if i advanced the timing) when you drive to places like reno i always run a lower octane gas. it was maybe a combonation of thin air and bad gas? imo.

The car kicked butt in Reno. It started running like crap when I got back down to the Sacramento area. At least it is running fine now.

just the opposite, thinner(less oxygen) air means richer mixture.1bdpone #1 get your car tuned(check the currant air-fuel mix)it may need to be adjusted.until then spend the money for some 91 or greater fuel or back out some timing. pinging kills pistons

Prolly bad or not so good gas, was 89 not 91 and went from high altidute down to Sac. timing could be offed a little. Usually any altidute change like that in my car requires a timing adjustment and sometimes even takes a good 50 miles to get the computer to remember what it is supposed to do.

How much timing are u running? What mods do you have (if any)?

I am running stock 10 degree timing and pretty much stock on the motor. It does have a cold air intake, shorty headers and magnaflow exhaust. 9mm spark plug wires, new ICM and map sensor (new as in the last 6 months). I spoke with a Ford mechanic and he said it is not unusual for the computer to have to re-adjust from being up in the high altitude.

As far as tuning goes (uncle bill)... An out of tune 5.0 Mustang is not going to get over 28mpg driving at over 75mph through thr mountains.

The good thing is my Mustang is running just fine and no pinging now.
