So I got gears about a month ago and since the day I got em the rear end has been making a humming noise. It only happens when I take my foot off the pedal after already accelerating. It doesn't make the the noise while I'm accelerating. I was told that the gears need to be broken in. So far I haven't seen any decrease in sound, but then again I've only ran about a full tank since I got the gears. Is this normal?? Someone help me out please!!

When gears are installed, especially ratio's outside the norm (4.10's and up), you will get noise. There's no way around it. Keep this is mind, you're going from a 3.08-3.27 stock ratio (or larger, if you've already had them done) to 4.10-4.56's...that's a serious increase. The biggest problems I see are folks buying used parts- both r&p's and carriers, wanting to re-use "questionable" or downright trash bearings, or changing wheel/tire combo's (sizing) when a gear swap is done. You cannot drive a car with 4.30's the same as you would a car with 3.55's on the freeway. There are far too many variables (driveshaft/transmission/axle bearings/engine itself) to deal with and expect a quite ride. If the entire car is new, then there's a question to be raised...

Jermey I have been trying to pm you for a few weeks to see how things worked out.Your pm box was and last time I checked, still full. The gears are good FORD takeouts and almost all your bearings are used.I did replace your pinion bearing as the old one and the pinion gear was nearly seized in your housing. It took alot of force to remove your old pinion.I did advise you there was a noticable amount of water/moisture in the oil that I drained, which most likley caused the problem. It almost looked like it had been around water, under water or stored outside for a period of time as alot of the parts had rust and surface rust.

Just as John says you will have bearing noise when using old bearings and such. All the parts have a wear pattern and when that is changed alot of factors can happen, one being noise.Used parts can do this.I have had alot of luck with used parts, but again thats what they are used parts. Most do it because it is cost efficient.I know of many shops that wont do a gear install without a complete bearing change. But as I told you ALL my work is guarenteed but I cant get ahold of you!

Call me anytime at 408-420-3003

I have a diff with 4.30 gears that has been sitting outside for over a year inside my car. Only about 7,000 miles on rebuilt diff and gears, should I expect problems if I reuse this pumpkin in a new car?

If it has been in the car you shouldnt have any problems.
