Looking to get my intake ported because it is only rated for 350 horses. My car will be right around there when the motor is done I hope. Also I am looking for someone who could polish the intake too.

I've never heard of the Cobra being limited to 350 HP? I'm sure there are people out there making more power than that with the Cobra intake.

But, if you want to get it ported one of the best (and definitely not the cheapest) is Extrude Hone.

www.extrudehone.com

If I am not mistaken Apex can send it in to have it done there [Confused]

Extrude hone is REAL GOOD but not cheap a nice cheaper way of getting it ported is to have Tom Moss take care of it for you. He charges about $120 for the lower intake and does a great job.

You can reach him at http://www.tmossporting.com/
Tell him Mike Mak from Apex Motorsports refered you and I am sure he can take care of you.

He is legendary in his porting of stock intakes.

Is the lower the only restriction? I was also considering porting my Cobra and polishing the outside to make it look nice while I am saving to buy my 331. I was also thinking that it might be cheaper to sell the Cobra and buy a better intake.

Oh, I forgot to mention that Ford did re-rate the Cobra to 350hp in the motorsport catalog. It was rated at 400hp when I bought it. I am getting tired of Ford rerating things, like the sportsman block.

Craig, why not just get a holley intake? i've heard thats the best flowing intake in the market.
you could easily sell the cobra for 300.. and just pay the difference.
Are you building a 331? do u plan on putting it together yourself or buying it ready? let me know becuase i'm interested in going the same route once this engine takes a poop. will your knew block be supercharged too?
thanks

The cobra intake won't stop you from making 350hp but it might be a bottleneck if you are pushing much more than that.

You have to pick an intake that is better suited to your application. Such as if you are blown, N/a, high-rev, etc.

It would be smarter to sell your intake and buy one that will meet your new setup when you strap it all together to get better #'s.

I am out sick today and will get you the info in the next 2 days. Ford used Extrude Hone on the the 99 Cobra intakes to help fix the lack of HP in the cars. I also believe all Contour SVTs are Extrude Honed.

The lower intake for the pushrod engines is the MAIN restriction. You can port the top and bottom but the main gains will be from porting the bottom. If you are in the area you can come by the shop and take a look at an intake we have that is Extrude Honed.

It is pretty easy to open up the lower yourself. Aluminum is very easy to work.

I would either send it into Tmoss OR have us do it for you. You'll be very happy with the results.

Here's how--> http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2003/12/efiintake/index.shtml

I was originally thinking of opening it up myself, but $120 is pretty cheap and I don't want to screw it up. I don't want to drive down to Santa Clara either, so maybe I will try to do it myself.

The problem with the bigger intakes is that they lose torque and only have more power well over 5k rpm. My S-trim will help with the high rpm power, so I want an intake that will give me a bunch of torque on a 331 setup, but still have 450rwhp around 5800 rpm with 10psi of boost. I found a good article on intakes in MM&FF and the GT40 performed well, but it was modified. I would love to see the test on a box stock one to see what there is to be gained by porting. The GT40 had much more torque than the Holley and the Holley's horsepower did not pass the GT40 until 5200RPM on a high reving NA 347. The extra high RPM horsepower will probably get you better ET's, but the better low and midrange torque will be much more fun to drive on the street. If I need an extra couple of mph at the track, I can just buy a smaller supercharger pulley. I am planning on staying in the street class which means I will have to detune it to stay above 11.50 anyway on my ET Streets. However, I would love to get kicked out with a 10.99 at least once, but my heads and intake will probably keep me from that. Maybe not, the stock bottom end and cam with box stock Edelbrock 6037's and Cobra intake got me to 11.43 with ideal racing conditions.

Here is the intake article. Read the introduction to the test, don't just look at the dyno graphs.

Oh, the 11.43 was with the 3.33" blower pulley that produces 10psi with my setup. I could always put a 2.95 pulley on it if my fuel system could support it. 30lb injectors and FMU. I would have to test it with a wide band O2 before racing it.
