well took my car in to get smogged today, and they wouldnt even test it. I thought he would let me slide with the cobra intake and carbed valve covers, but i guess not. so I have to pull those off and put the stock parts back on...but besides that, the damn thing can't hold an idle. it will lope at 1k rpm, then slowly rise up to about 1300-1500, then drop back down etc. would this be the IAC messing up, or something different? I also noticed just today that one of the nuts that hold the TB onto the intake is missing, but there didnt seem to be any leak. if there was a small one would it cause this idle problem?

I thought the Cobra Intake was smog legal? I passed with my Cobra Intake and GT-40. You should be able to call Ford and get the CARB number. Another option would be to look it up here

http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermkt/devices/amquery.php

Not sure about the valve covers. I think you need to have the tube that goes from the filler tube to the TB hooked up and can't run a breather.

This info probably doesn't do you much good since you have already swapped parts [Smile]

I would check for leaks. If one of the studs is missing from the TB I would start there. Also, double check vaccum lines and check all the gaskets.

One more thing.. take your car to a different smog place [Wink]

yeah i thought it was smog legal too, but he saw the line that goes to the throttle body plugged with a bolt. also, on the driver side where the pcv goes, there's supposed to be a 80* fitting but i dont have that, so I had to use the stock, two-line fitting, and the other side is also plugged. and this is the place that's supposed to let me slide on visual [Roll Eyes] as for the valve covers, those aren't too much of a pain to swap out, I just dont want to have to swap intakes, get new gaskets etc. also I think the rockers are hitting the baffles on these valve covers cuz they kinda tick on the sides that the fill holes are. so I guess I gotta do those tomorrow.

I've checked all the vac lines just so they wouldnt give me shit for em. what gaskets should I check?

Check the upper and lower intake gasket and the t-body/EGR spacer gasket.

well the guy wouldnt have given two shits if I didnt have those vac lines plugged with bolts. like I said the fitting for the pcv is the 2-way that's on the stock manifold. it didnt have the 90* thats supposed to be on it. so I think if maybe I just got one of those little vac line caps for that fitting, swapped valve covers and hooked up the vac line that goes to the TB it should be ok. he said nothing about the cam, just that it couldnt hold an idle. I've taken the upper intake off so many times it just might be leakin from there.

if the egr ports on the heads (in the middle, intake side) were kinda open would it cause this? cuz the very top of those ports are uncovered by the lower intake manifold [Confused] makes me wonder if its sucking some air in there...

hunting idle is usually a sign that one (or many) of the sensors are out of whack or not working right.

the 10 pin connectors (salt and pepper shaker looking things at the rear of the upper intake) are pretty common to have connection problems. I would unplug them, spread the male pins with a small punch or pin, spray the connector out with WD-40 and then apply a little bit of dielectric grease to the female side of the plugs.

the 10 pins connect 90% of the sensors to the EEC harness, the other sensors that arent on those plugs I think are only the o2 sensors which plug into the EEC harness by the passenger firewall with the harness that runs down that side of the trans tunnel

Vacuum leaks cause idleing problems. Have you set your TPS yet?

How do you set the TPS? And how do you know where to set it at?

you set the tps at .98v with the key on, engine off. put a multimeter lead on the green wire and ground the other lead and adjust it until it reads about .98v. you might have to oblong the screw holes to get it to read right.

well I found my vacuum leak...the passenger side rear bolt on my upper intake (short bolt) was broken off [Mad] I went to swap valve covers and pulled the bolt out and a piece of the intake came with it. there was some kind of fluid on the gasket on that side. I JB welded it and put a bunch of RTV so it would seal, so far it seems to be holding as the idle stays at 1k rpm like it should. and of course the smog machine at the shop i was supposed to go to was broken [Mad] grrr
