There is one at the top and one that wraps around the first coil and a half at the bottom. What do those things really do and will removal of either or both cause any excessive noise problems?

After time it absolutely will cause noise. They are used to eliminate metal/metal noise, and to soften ride.

I know of people that run w/o them and don't have MUCH noise but do get some when combining compression of the susp and turning the wheel like getting into driveways and parking spaces.
You guys ever remember the stuff that you dip parts into to give them a rubbery coating (ie. plier handles, hammers, etc.) I can't remember the name but i always wondered if that would work in this case to not have such a thich isolator but still have the noise suppression?
