This other car wont start.How can the coil be bench tested for overall performance.Can a coil be working just a little bit,or is an all or nothing type device? [burnout] [burnout] [burnout]

Yes it can be working just a little causing big problems. there is a ohms test for coils. You check between the primary + and - conections and then from the secondary to the primary. There are spacs for each coil made. I don't have a book in front of me with specs right now.

its so easy to plug another one in that I've never bothered testing one.

coil died on my truck last year and it still had spark, started swapping parts and when I swapped the coil it fired right up.

Firmly grab the top of the coil with your index finger and thumb. Now grab a good ground. Have a buddy turn the car over. If you begin to cry after the 3rd revolution of the engine, the coil is good. [Big Grin]

The coil should ohm somewhere between .50 -.65

sorry but i disagree....the coil might be fine, and you might not ever cry, just turn all your hair curly.

or start to smoke...either way it's a harsh test...have your GF or wife hold the coil, and you turn the car over, thats what i do
