Ok since most people will skim the post then say "buy this" I will list first off what is brand new and has already been replaced:
O2 wiring harness both O2 sensors ECT (replaced, but from another 5.0, so it is not brand new). - heater line coolant sensor ACT sensor - intake manifold coolant sensor Thermostat (195* prestone)
Other pertanent info: 100% stock engine from filter box to oil pan. Stock headers Stock 4-cat H pipe, known to have passed smog on my brothers car about a year ago EGR is off his car as well
Just did a MAF swap this weekend because smog ref said I had to have MAF on my `89 to pass visual. - A9L computer and stock MAF.
smog #'s:
15mph / 1483rpm %CO2 - 13.9 / %O2 - 1.3 / HC (PPM) 174 (121 max) / CO% - 0.18 (0.76max) / NO (PPM) - 1592 (807max)
25mph / 1636rpm %CO2 - 14.2 / %O2 - 0.5 / HC (PPM) - 150 (96max) / CO% - 0.47 (0.65max) / NO (PPM) - 856 (746max)
He also failed me on the visual because my check engine light didn't work, side effect of the MAF swap, I geuss I need to add a LED on the dash from the EEC's check engine light output and label is "check engine" for the smog nazi's.
Upon scanning for codes I got the following but dont know what they are: (engine running) 66 98 (engine off) 95 66 29
Smog ref said one of them was for fuel pump voltage, but I know that would be there as I didn't run a new wire for that when I did the MAF swap, he said that code is fine as long as it doesn't trip the engine light when I get one hooked up.
any ideas? I'm so close Last smog test the numbers for HC were in the 1000's so all the stuff I replaced helped a lot, but still need to make it run better

high HC sounds like still slightly too rich. was it nice and HOT, aka 195 degrees? ever shut the car off before it was tested?
a little methanol in the tank should do the trick at this point...
since your NOx #'s are (relatively) low, you can trade some NOx for HC I believe by messing with the timing (not sure), aka advancing it a hair...
did he test EGR function? it worked?
also, smog pump work ok? [ November 29, 2004, 03:48 PM: Message edited by: JoeT ]

29-VSS signal voltage is too low -> VSS is bad 66-MAF sensor out of range (signal voltage too low)-> MAF sensor is bad or not calibrated correctly. 95-FPM signal indicates circuit failure -> FPM senses fuel pump voltage is out of range.

drove it from HMB to fremont via the 101 -> 237 route, took an hour.
The engine was turned off to do the visual check, then tested, it was still plenty hot because the fan was tripping on / off and it only trips when the coolent temp is 205 degree's.
Thanks for the codes!
VSS = not hooked up at all FPM = did not add this line when I did the MAF swap
MAF bad...shit

I believe that 'bad maf' could be a stored code, aka no longer a KOER code...
can verify with a voltmeter during operation

I highly doubt the MAF is a stored code, considering the MAF swap was done 3 days ago and the MAF has not been unplugged during that time.

66 Vane Air Flow (VAF) or Mass Air Flow (MAF) signal low - VAF MAF
96 (O) Fuel pump monitor circuit shows no power - Power / Fuel Pump Circuits (R) AIR Bypass (AIRB) not working - Air Injection (M) (Service 87 code first if present) Fuel pump relay or battery power feed was open - Power / Fuel Pump Circuits
95 (O) Fuel pump: open, bad ground or always on - Power / Fuel Pump Circuits (R) AIR not Diverting (AIRD) - Air Injection (M) Possible bad fuel pump ground or open between fuel pump and pin 8 at PCM (Fuel Pump Monitor signal) - Power / Fuel Pump Circuits
98 (R) Did not pass KOEO yet (Get 11 in KOEO first)
98 looks like its nothing...
I may have the running / KOEO list of the codes reversed, in that case the AIRD valves arent opening? I geuss I get to check on that vacuume routing again, joy.
