I am not exactly sure what the difference is between a standard and high performance rack and pinion but it sounds like the store doesn't know either. I DO KNOW that a high performance steering shaft is different because it eliminates the rag joint for better response. COuldn't they just look up your car and see what part # the steering rack is??? I would think so but who knows.

They did look up my car and it came up with 4 different types of rack and pinions thy said it has to do with the steering ratio the standard has 3 turns and the performance has 21/2 turns thanks

I'd only buy a ford replacement rack directly from Ford as many aftermarket or reman'd racks from elsewhere are sloppy or will give steering response that can feel over assisted. If I recall right the stock ratio is 15:1
