my friend has a 66 stang. 302 bored to a 306, demon carb, edelbrock intake manifold, afr 185cc heads, BIG cam, LTs into 1 chamber flows, and a bunch of other sh**. he has 383s right now but wants to go with 4.11s. he wants to get a Tremec TKO, but i told him to settle with a T45 or even a T56 (cuz of the high gears). he refuses. what would be the best option for this?

The TKO is the best choice if he wants a 5 speed. A T56 is VERY expensive. I like my TKO, it just FEELS so much stronger than a T5.

over time the t5 will die t45 is a weird combo, stupid swap, pointless comes to mind, well compared to a t5 anyway t56 would be great, strongest, overkill, and the most expesnive
the tko is the best option when looking at the long term, just be prepared to massage the trans tunnel to get it to fit, or so i have been told, you can ask fasterdamnit more about it
the t5 will swap in easier, will not break instantly if on street tires, slick are a different story though

A t5 would be the easiest and cheapest to stick in there, but it wont hold up for long at all with the power i'm assuming he's making, they barely hold up to stock motored cars. The t56 would be nice, but i agree its too expensive and the tko would be better. It also depends on what the guy wants to do with the car; drag car, autocross car, only a street car. And like said before if its going to see launches on slicks, the t5 will definately get grenaded in the short future.

The TKO is easier to fit in a 66 than a T56. As far as gear ratios, unless you get a Viper T56, the top gear will be very close. The T56 is .62 6th gear, the TKO is .67.

the T56 will definitely require some major butchering of the car. My t5 in my 66 took some massaging.

No, actually it's just as easy as swapping in a T5. My buddy is running a T56 in his '65. The hardest part of the swap was replacing his auto pedal carrier with a manual pedal carrier.
