someone told me that if i did have a poblem with the computer then i should unplug the battery after i turn on the car, and see if it runs better, then i would know that it was the computer???????

wouldn't the computer run off the current produced from the alternator?

the test you just described is to see if the alternator works or not.

some people say that test harms the computer, you may have that confused / whomever told you.

what they should have told you was disconnect the battery while the car is off and turnon the heeadlights which will drain any stored energy in the computer.leave it disconnected for about 10 mins and then start is back up and see if the car runs any different.what that does is it clears all the existing codes that may have been stored.from there you should run it for a bit and then run a scan to see if any codes come up.

the computer is most likely not the problem but a sensor or something out of tune.the scan will tell you this if it is indeed an electrical/computer/sensor related problem and not a mechanical issue.

Disconnecting the battery while the car is running is a good way to cause a huge voltage spike and destroy an alternator and other senstive electrical parts.
