What are you running? Planing on using Redline but which one to use? MTL, ML-90, 75W90 NS, or Synthetic D4 ATF.

Thanks

I heard, NOT to run redline's tranny fluid. I hear its too thin, and is all wrong for the trans. Royal Purple makes a good fluid, but one of the best is one you buy from Chevy, GM Syncromesh ATF.

Running regular manual tranny fluid will kill a mustang tranny. GM syncromesh is for tremec's only (3550,TKO models not stock models) Your going to want to run ATF with Dexron/mercon 3 additive in it. I'd suggest either Redline ATF with Dex/mercon 3 or Amsoil ATF with Dex/mercon 3. Both are high performance oils and can take much more heat under hard use

Whats the harm of using GM syncromesh in a regular trans?

Good question, I wish I had an answer to this one but I can tell you what I've seen from past experience with different types of transmissions. Transmissions are built with certain parts or internals which are mated to specific additives and oil. If a person was to use a different type of additive or weight oil certain things could happen. If the oil is thinner than required oil coverage might not be enough to protect the internal parts. Other factors could mean that certain parts actually swell as a reaction to the wrong fluid. For a technical answer I would call D&D performance as they are really the ones who could give you the exact reasoning. So the standard that I have come to know from them and other people in the business is Dexron 3/mercon ATF for all stock T-5's T-45's and the new Tremec's. I've used sythetic and mineral base with great results. The GM syncromesh is reserved for the 3550 and the TKO and dexron 3/mercon ATF is also used in the tremec 6 speeds. I've seen oils work for a good while that are not the intended oil for a particular tranny but as a result the customer has seen a 20% reduction in transmission life from it. I just stick to what is intended for each particular tranny. I step away from it some in using a synthetic but the mustang tranny's seem to accept the synthetic's well. This isn't always the case as I know dodges, at least with my dodge that running anything other than stock GM tranny fluid is a big no no.

I'm 99% sure GM syncromesh is for tranys that use brass syncro keys...It's great for the 3650's, but for a T5 just use Plain old Dex III ATF...

I've blown up T5's with Redline and all kinds of different syn oils....I felt no real difference....

Hmm, now I am curious. I was reccomended back in 2001 to the GM atf, and its been in my tranny since. Note, I have been road racing on it, and driving around on it for 45k, and no problems. Thats why I am curious about all the questioning of it.

If you still have the stock T45 switch back to regular ATF...If you road race often use Mobil~1 or any synthetic Dextron III equivelent(sp) ATF for cooler running temps....Dextron III ATF is designed for the Carbon Fiber blocking ring design that the Mustang/World Class T-5s, and T-45s always had...
