I just installed my cam and I stumbled across something very interesting. I read that there are two TDC's. One is on the compression stroke and the other is on the exhaust stroke. <--- I did know that. But what I don't know is if it matters which one I install dot to dot on. I hand rotated my crank to line up with the cam and then installed my timing chain DOT to DOT. I don't know if it is on the exhaust stroke or the compression stroke!!! I could be totally off on the TDC or I could be right on. I could check everything and re-install on the compression TDC... But will I run into problems when it comes time to adjust my valves :::which I was about to do::: and start the beast if I just leave it how it is? Or does installing DOT to DOT negate the TDC thing altogether??? I am confused here if you didn't notice! I just want to do what is correct so any help is greatly apreciated.

FasterDamnit I am waiting to see what you think of my new adventure into camland [Big Grin]

I had an epiphany just now... Let me know what you think about this: It doesn't matter which stroke the cylinder is on because the removal of the camshaft and the distributor creates a new compression stroke when everything is re-installed. Basically, when the new cam is installed and all the valves are adjusted and the dizzy is stabbed, I have created a new compression stroke and a new exhasut stroke. So installing the cam DOT to DOT is the only thing I need to be concerned with... as well as adjusting the valves and stabbing the dizz correctly.

Does this sound right? It is a summation of what was actually going through my head just now. Only a car nut or someone working into the wee hours of the night [Smile] would actually be thinking about this right now.

Thank you!

Just bring #1 to TDC and time the cam. Usually this is done with a dial indicator on #1 to insure TDC.

I don't have one of those... [Mad] I am also trying to see if I am even remotely correct in my thinking of how to install the timing chain.

Oh yeah, Ed Curtis also told me that I shouldn't worry about TDC and just watch the valves and adjust them that way. Then button her up and head to the track! I am a confused mess over here. I need to go to bed.

Typically if you have the dot on the crank lined up with the desired dot on the cam and after spinning the motor over several times with them still lining up you should be on the money. While this isn't as precise as using a timing wheel it gets the job done.

Now thats my kind of talk [Wink]

Seriously though, thanks for the help. I need to start fresh tomorrow and rotate the motor a few times and see if my eyeballing the dots still lines up correctly.
