I have been looking and can't find the information I need. I have a stock 91GT, what gears are in the diff??? 3.08??
I'm looking to upgrade a little bit what do you recommend? 3.27, 3.55??
This is my daily driver so I dont want to go radical, something that will put more power down and still be able to drive on the freeway.
Thanks Rich [ April 02, 2004, 04:06 AM: Message edited by: hard jokur ]

I'm assuming this is a 5 speed?....
The easy way to find your gear ratio is to read the tag on the diffential cover....It's attached by one of the cover bolts...
There is a tag on the door which gives you your gear info, but I forget which letters mean what...Maybe someone can help me out on that one...
Anyway, I loved my 3.55's in my 94 and I plan on doing 3.55's on my next 5.0 Mustang...If you installed 3.27's IMO it wouldn't even be worth it...I consider 3.55's the bare minimum....

I like my 3.55s. I haven't bought the correct gear for the speedometer, but I think I am around 2,500 rpm at 80 mph, which isn't all that bad. I noticed quite a bit of pick up from my stock gears (I think they were 3.08s). My friend is extremely happy with his 3.73s, though.
BTW, does anybody know the number of teeth for the speedometer gear for 3.55s?

Okay, sorry, I'm retarded. To address your original question. You can tell the gears in your rear end (provided that no prior owner had changed them) by looking at the Vehicle Safety Compliance Label. It is located on the driver's side door. It is the big white label. Pretty hard to miss. Anyway, if you scan to the far right hand bottom, you will observe a series of letters. Pay attention to only the letter or number under AX!
Chilton's lists the following axle options for the 1991 Mustang.
8 = 2.73 Axle Ratio Conventional M = 2.73 Axle Ratio Limited-Slip Y = 3.08 Axle Ratio Conventional Z = 3.08 Axle Ratio Limited-Slip F = 3.45 Axle Ratio Conventional R = 3.45 Axle Ratio Limited-Slip 5 = 3.27 Axle Ratio Conventional E = 3.27 Axle Ratio Limited-Slip 6 = 3.73 Axle Ratio Conventional W = 3.73 Axle Ratio Limited-Slip 2 = 3.55 Axle Ratio Conventional K = 3.55 Axle Ratio Limited-Slip
Hope this helps!
Mark

Yeah, thanks Mark that's what I was talkin about...
For you 89 W/T5 you'll need the Black 20tooth FRPP gear for 3.55's...

unless you're making over 350 to the wheels, anything less than 4.10s is weak

Ratio Snob...
3.73's or 4.10's. Or maybe split the diff and go 3.90's.
