I'm doing a cheap re-build on an '93 Block and I have a choice of using '88 Forged Pistons w/160k on them from another block or '93 Hypereutectic Pistons w/75k on them. They both look fine with no cracks or pock marks, etc. Since I'm re-ringing it, I have a choice of either Piston set.
I've seen a thread where someone used the stock Forged Pistons only to break the block in half @ 500 Hp, while the pistons remained salvagable upon inspection. Forged obviously seems more durable, my only doubt is that they have nearly 3x the mileage of the Hype. set.
I've also seen many threads here which tout the Hypeutectic pistons as being fine with a safe tune, being used w/S-trims, etc. But 5.0 mags state the Hype. set as being the "glass jaw" in the 302 motor chronology in one of their older editorials.
So, Forged (160k) or Hypereutectic (75k)? Thanks in advance.

Forged. As long as their in good condition that is. (should have ANY used shortblock parts checked out at a machine shop before installing in a new motor)

Also, does cleaning the Piston crown with a wire wheel damage the piston at all? Just thinking of using one to clean the carbon deposits off.
Thanks for the info. I'll get 'em checked out.

Certain hard wire wheels will damage the pistons. (They are aluminum after all). I use a wire wheel to clean pistons with caked on Carbon. Just make sure the wheel you use doesn't scratch up the pistons....a little is okay.

unless you have a machinist check them all, I'd go with the lower mileage pistons, apples to apples. a set of replacement TRW forged pistons are something like $200 from PAW with your choice of dish/relief size I believe (could be wrong on the price)

how much power will the car see if it will just be NA, so no power adder i would use the hypers just because they have so much less mileage but the fordged one are stronger

I decided to go cast on the cheap re-fresh and have the high-mileage forged set for spares/paperweights. Hopefully they'll hold up.
Thanks for the info.

Cast? Are you planning a mild all motor combo?
