Are there any legal issues with having or running Nitrous on the street here in CA?

I know in Rochester it's against the law to have your bottle hooked up while you're on the street. I've heard in other state's it's legal as long as the bottle is closed (it can still be hooked up). I've heard that you ALWAYS have to have the bottle properly labelled.

So what're the legal issues here in CA?

I beleive you can have the bottle in the car(as long as it has the DOT stamp on the bottle), but the N20 line can't be hooked up.

i believe this is true
but, i have never heard of anyone getting a ticket if the bottle was off, even if the line is connected, but it only takes one hardass cop

No N2O connected.. The bottle needs to have a DOT label on it too. I will have to find the VC on it. An old roommate was a Hwy Patrol and showed me the VC on it. Put in you trunck and cover it up. If they do not see it than all is good. It is not illegal unless you get caught.

valve must be closed. NO nitrous can be in your lines.

That is all.

If you do find that one hardass cop though...there is a section within the vc somewhere (I will look it up again) about transferring a pressurized container in a vehicle not such equipped to carry one, no permits, etc.

It's not likely an officer will cite you for this, but it is written, and worse things have been known to happen. [Frown]

A CHP officer that is a member of Norcal-Ls1 looked through his books and found nothing specifically about nitrous. There were other things that they could technically write it up on but didn't specifically mention nitrous. He said cops can write you up for whatever, then it's up to the court to uphold a ticket. Besides, like Elapid said there are 50 state legal kits with carb #'s. NOS wouldn't seek a carb # ($$$ outta their pocket) for something that's only legal to be run at the track. It'd be like an offroad H pipe with a carb #, lol.

I thought the permits to transport was only needed for certain amounts, cause I carry oxygen/acetlyn(sp) tanks on my work truck and I don't have to have permits cause it's not enough.

that may be true...but The vehicle is most likely properly equipped to carry those tanks (Chained, upright postition most likely).

Like I said, it is goingh to be some hard ass cop to bust on something small like that...specifically a DOT chp officer.

Those guys KNOW thier shit....and will NOT be afraid to go at you for every single mistake you have on the car. Thier job is mostly going after truck drivers, and correctness of the vehicles, log books, etc...but many rules do apply to passenger vehicles as well.

Regarding the bottle being labelled...

I'm considering eventually getting the Zex system for the SHO, does the Zex bottle label cover everything needed to represent the Nitrous so that it will be legal as per Hazmat regulations?

I would think that most companies would send their bottles out with the proper labelling (unless California is specific to this, like everything else... [Roll Eyes] )... I don't think the labelling is an issue unless it's some home-made crap, or some kid ripped the label off to get the bottle chromed or painted.

The remote bottle openers I've seen completely cover the valve knob... very suspicious if a cop ever sees that.

Of course, the whole idea is to avoid getting your car searched to the extent the nitrous would be discovered.

reminds me of a time i got popped out in concord or livermore...can't remember which one...whereever patterson pass road is...anyways...

was cold chillen in the back of a cop car as the cop peers into my car and says 'oh hes got nitrous, call CHP'. i'm wondering if i turned the damn bottle off so i'm kinda trippen and what not. then, CHP comes rolling up and the old city cop that pulled me over said 'son, i need the code for nitrous, do you know it or can you look it up?' then...oh yes...then:

CHP looks him dead nuts in the eye and said "I'm sorry sir, I didn't know it was illegal to have cold air in a bottle...good day" and left...

cop was pissed but i was grinning ear to ear [Smile]

Here's the website to CARB to see if your go-fast parts are CARB exempt. (looks like the only nitrous system for Fords with an EO number is the 5.0s)
