As some of you know I am looking at an out of state car, I have been told that the car needs to be "California Certified". The owner of the car does not know whare to look for the tag, and either do I. I would think that it would be on the emmisions tag or somthing, does anyine know whare it would say California Certified? Thanks

Ok i changed my hood and the labels tore tryin to transfer them. Go to ford give them your vin# they can reorder your emission labels (can take a couple weeks). Most reputable body shops already include the cost of these labels in the estimate if your car was in a wreck and replace them. When I recently went to smog my car among many other things visually it failed for was missing emission labels. Luckily everybody in here looks out for each other and reccomended a shop in Sac. that over looks alot of mods.

Why? A missing emission label is NOT a reason for failure. The smog machine asks if it is certified for California or Federal emission and if the label is missing it is up to the smog tech to determine which the car is certified for using the manuals and what components on the vehicle.

When the underhood label is missing, a smog tech should be able to consult their emissions application manual, they should be able to find what the car needs in there, it shouldnt be grounds for a failure. If the car is 49 state(ie not CA caertified) thats ok, the smog tech will just have to note that when he enters the car into the smog machine. Hope this helps

I read that I cant register the car, if it isnt CA certified, and how could they tell if it was without the tag, I dont want to buy this car and not be able to register it.

Yes, it is on the emissions label. It will either say "conforms to CA regulations" or "conforms to US EPA regulations" I'm sure a friendly Ford dealer can run the VIN for you and find out that way.

OK it looks like I read somthing wrong, It doesnt need to be CA certified if the vehicle has more than 7,500 miles on it, so it looks like I just need the owner to get a new label for it and I should be OK

That is where they are wrong. It is NOT at their discretion. They are just lazy and on a power trip. They are EXACTLY the type of smog shop that gives the rest of us a bad name. As you stated, that's
