Hey guys I was wondering if anyone could recommend a place where I can buy a very good 331 short block, I broke my crank on the first journal,#1 main cap (cracked in half), block, main girdle, timing cover, timing chain, distributor, couple valves, oil pump, and crank pulley went bu-bye. It was a 331 DSS Pro Bullet, which came with the car when i bought it. The crank looks brand new, but my boy who took it apart said it could have been due to belt tension. I need something that will withstand about 600rwhp. If it makes a difference I use it more on the street, than I do at the strip, but the guy I bought it from only used it for strip. And of course its blown . Thanks in advance guys.

Buy a Dart or R-Block, spec out your 331 kit from CHP or DSS, and have the motor built by a reputable local shop. Best way to go!

600rwhp and a stock block is not a good combo, i would definatley look into either a dart or r block, and dont buy from wynne speed, post a topic about wynne speed and there customer relations and then decide if u wouod buy from them

Yeah, I've heard a few bad stories about Wynne Speed...A friend of mine took apart his Wynne Speed motor and found all kinds of different bolts in the wrong places....The flywheel had 4 different kinds of bolts holding it inplace....On a few of them he found upto 4 washers, cause some of the bolts were too long! ...
I would find a GOOD performance engine builder/machine shop and find out what he/they can do first...

There are horror stories with nearly all motor shops. I have heard the least complaints about DSS, which makes me wonder how much PSI you were using on that motor? (With pro-bullets, they can withstand 500+ hp w/girdle). On building motors you get what you pay for.cheap prices = cheap parts, guess-specs, TRW pistons, ETC. I'm sure you know about this, since you bought one of DSS's best motors..Why don't you call them? Tell us about you're combo and what happened to it on the strip. As with recommendations, I like DSS and Keith Craft.

Well actually it did have a girdle and it broke from one of the corners. I was running 13 psi, 72lbs injectors, stage 3 Trick Flow Heads, custom cam built by LaRoccas Performance and everything is tweeked with an EPEC put in by LaRoccas, which allowed me to run on pump gas without a problem. The car was running like a champ, till that sad day. Damn, I still look at the crank and makes me pissed because it looks brand new. I guess its how the saying goes, "shit happens". Anyways, my friend told me about the 331 street fighter pro short block from CHP and I have been leaning toward that way, but wanted to see what other mustang lovers had to say. Also, I have thought about that Dart block alot, but it cost like $2,100 and thats not including if machining is needed to fit the 331 stroker kit. By the way thanks for your response guys, I want to make a smart purchase and hearing peoples thoughts and experiences really helps.

I'd recomend geting a 4-bolt main block built at a local (quality) machine shop.
When I was looking for my 331 I ran accross a bad-ass deal I just couldn't pass up. Forged shortblock with billet flywheel, dampner, SC cam, steel girdle, all shipped for $2400. 2000 miles later I find crankshaft thrust to be 10 times what it should be. Now I have a cracked crank & am in search of an A4 or R block. Issues like this are assembly errors. Leason learned. I'll never buy a shortblock thru the mail again.

It was making 610 rwhp and 585 .lbs of torque. In terms of the pistions, only one intake and one exhaust valve slighty touched (not major) on the pistons, but other than that they are just fine. My heads are fine, cam is perfect, rods are fine, but everything else is gone.

I would not use a stock production or even a sportsman block. I'd step right up to a 4-bolt main block. In fact..that's what I'm doing now.
The Dart can be had for $1950 & comes fully machined & will fit a 331 without clearancing anything. However, everything on the block should be checked by a quality machine shop. Some have had to do considerable machine work to get them up to par. Others have had zero issues. This block has 4-bolts on all the mains & can handle over 1500hp. An R302 or A4 Block is another option, however New the R block is over $1500 & requires considerable machining. This block has 4-bolt mains on all but the front & back mains & can handle 1200hp.
Older blocks are slightly stronger then the roller blocks, but they require you to retrofit it for a roller cam. That can add a bit of $$$ to the price. The sportsman is a little stronger then the stock blocks, but it too is a 2-bolt main & only ~10-15% stronger then stock. The weakpoints in the production blocks is the 2-bolt mains & main webbing. They just can't handle the power you're making.
Another option is to step up the a sportsman 351 block. These can handle the power you're making & aren't as expensive as the Dart & R blocks. I can't remember if the 351 sportsmans are roller blocks or not..you'll have to check.

a '69 junkyard 351w is basically the same thing as the current A351 motorsport block, handles the same power, just another option. Of course it would need a roller conversion if you were so inclined.
And a stock 351w roller block would be 600rwhp capable all day long.
