I know this is kind of out there, but my H20 pump (this is on a Tahoe) shit the bed in chevy fashion yesterday and I'm replacing the radiator, H20 pump, and all the hoses. Everything is ready to bolt back up but I can't get the threaded fan shroud snout/nut thingy off. The chiltons references a special tool, but I've done everything I can to hold the pulley in place while I remove it, I've even gone so far as to undo the H20 pump cover and hold on to it from the back.
I can't seem to determine if it's reverse threaded, so I've hit it with a ton of WD-40 and the POS will not give. I've spent several hours fighting with it and I'm really pissed off.
any tricks? anybody know where I can rent the tool? [ June 29, 2003, 06:15 PM: Message edited by: shade-tree ]

Are you talking about the fittings that actually go into the water pump?

the fan clutch is 'screwed' into the H20 pump snout, and the H20 pulley is just along for the ride. I can't get it out.

on my truck (should be exactly like urs) i put a cresent wrench on the fan to pulley nut and put more tension on the belt, on the belt tensioner put on the socket wrench and instead of losening it like ur gonna take the belt off go the other way to tighten the belt, it will should provide enough tension to get the nut loose, and obviously the belt has to be on, and i would tell u but i cant remember if the nut is reverse thread or nut, good luck, its just as fun to tighten it properly

There is a special tool for this that is available at most auto part stores. Price varies from about $20 to $50 depending on quality. I worked at Napa and they sell it in their Service Tool line. Comes with the wrenches to hold it in place and remove/install.

Hey Joe use a screwdriver between the pulley boltheads to bind up that part and use adjustable pliers to unscrew the fan. Whichever way the fan spins when running, the threads will almost definately go the other way also.

If you want to know what direction the fan screws in, I'm willing to bet its in the opposite direction as the fan rotates when the engine is running.

central chevrolet (fremont) charged me only $23.00 for the removal (took him 10 minutes). w00t.
daily driving the mustang is kinda fun though. It's caused me to fix a couple minor things already
