I need a new tranny, but what is the difference between the Tremec TKO and 3550? Thanks.

I am getting the 3550 to swap into my car but I heard the TKO is better.
GR40(Andy) has one with a tri ax and it feels so nice.

what i was told when i bought my tko is that the gears have some kind of stronger steel liner, the case is the same, the gear ratios are the same, and the shifters are the same, but this is just what i was told

i believe the only difference is a stronger input shaft and it requires a different clutch

internally the same, different input/output shafts.
So I figure breaking an input shaft is like a fusible link for the tranny. I have a 3550 and I feel very confident in abusing it
TKO is just the next little step up. Selling point for me on the 3550 was that a McCleod bellhousing (steel) works with both a T5 and a 3550 (say if you're ever in the position of having to go back and forth), and the 3550 works with your stock clutch/pressure plate stuff, and works with your stock driveshaft. None of which is true for the TKO.

I'll probably go with the TKO because I don't want to use any of my stock stuff anyways, and the motor should be about 550hp n/a and I also have a 150 shot.

Why is it that almost all ford guys go for the tremmec? One of the only places I have found that mustang guys prefer the richmond over the tremmec is on the NMRA site. Is there anyone on here that has/had a richmond. I have heard nothing but good things about richmond trannies. Hopefully I will have mine soon if the guy ever gets back to me!

The 3550 uses the same bellhousing as the TKO. The clutch disc is different, but the other parts work just fine.

If you are making, or plan on making more than 400 hp, bite the bullet and get a TKO.

Richmond= no overdrive
NMRA is also the land of the pro-shifted T5 (no syncros, no downshifting). You won't find those out here either.
I guess the real deal is all of our cars are street cars. I don't want to be without my 0.68 overdrive when I'm bombing down the highway at 80 mph, do you?

It's not like there is much of a difference between the prices on the TKO and the 3550, what, $200-$300? Not exactly "biting the bullet" IMO

I agree, for the $200 difference in transmissions, the price of a 26 spline clutch disc, and having the driveshaft yoke changed, I would go TKO every time and twice on Thursdays.
I actually don't know much about the Richmond boxes, but Eric from Griggs has one in his 68. I remember that he had a problem with the output shaft bearing not getting enough oil. Other than that I think he likes it.

I would tell you to get a TKO but I'm pretty sure sawson gave you the boot so I don't know if you could even read this. TKO in my opinion is a way better tranny.
