Pulled this code from a scanner on a friends car. P044 Evaporative Emmission System Purge Control Valve Circuit Open
Anyone know what the hell this means??? The car was in an accident about 2 months ago Runs fine, but the check engine light came on earlier this week. The girl gave me this code & asked me to find out what it means

The evaporative emission system takes fuel vapors in the gas tank and vapors that are stored in the charcoal canister and draws them into the combustion chamber and burns them when the engine is started. At lower RPMs, the control valve is closed and doesn't allow gases into the combustion chamber. At higher RPMs the control valve opens and these gases are drawn into the combustion chamber.
Sounds like your valve isn't opening
I haven't messed with this stuff on 4.6's much, but it sounds like a sensor is either bad or unplugged. Again, I don't know the 4.6L smog system, so I can't tell you where they stuck it under the good. I'd start with the charcol canister. Its usually a black rectangular box the size of a small phone book with tubes going to and from it.
Make sure you post what it really ends up being. [ February 21, 2003, 02:19 PM: Message edited by: st5150 ]

Yeah, it's on a 97 or 98GT. The girl works here, so i'll check it and see Is there a way I can tell if something needs to be replaced?

O.k. I checked it. It's that black bottle looking thing right? I checked the plugs, but no visible damage is there. Is it the plug? Should it be replaced or is it the whole unit?
