What is the first year for an 8.8" rear in a Mustang? [Confused] ...

I was pretty sure that 86 was the first year..I'm not saying that late 85's dont have them, but every V8 in 86 had an 8.8" I know that for sure...What's the correct answer?...

This link says that 85's dont have 8.8's

just 'cause it comes up a lot, the '84-86 SVO's had a 7.5" rear, nice ~50 lbs. weight savings at the stock power level...

For some more proof, I called the local parts stores for a differential cover gasket.......I got some Felpro #...For '85 its RDS-55081..For an '86+ its RDS-55341...

This is just more prof that 86 have 8.8's and '85 dont!..

I am still doing some research on this, and am going to get the manuf. date as well.

so far Richmond Gear states that for an 8.8 ring and pinon set for years 85-02....

Although visually, the 1986 Mustang GT was nearly identical to the 1985 GT, under the hood was a completely different story....Also big news was the 8.8-inch rear axle, a big improvement over the 7.5-inch ring gear. Other upgrades included a clutch enlarged from 10” to 10.5” and new viscous (fluid-filled) motor mounts. Axle ratios carried over from 1985.
