If I were to buy a 4 cyl, and planned on swapping in a 5.0 or other engine, how much preparation would need to be done to the car?

I forgot to add that this would be on a fox body, but that was probably obvious after you read it for a second.

if your going to keep it efi, you would need an engine harness, for it, other than that it will all bolt in.... the brakes and struts are diffferent on a v8 car as well as the rearend is only a 7.5 instead of the 8.8..... other than that it shouldn't be very hard at all....

it is one of the biggest pains in the ass you will ever undertake.
How long do you think it would take you to *pull the dash apart *swap pedals *swap motor, *swap k-member, *swap tranny, *swap rear end *swap brakes/lines *swap suspension
now granted some of us have done all this stuff but spread out over like a year (or more).
I would much rather pick up a slightly crusty 5.0 for around 2-3k and fix some of the easier stuff, like say pick one up with a blown clutch or something

Yeah, I figured I would have to upgrade some of the suspension for the extra weight, but yeah, I plan on stripping the car all the way down, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Ah, good points. Ideally I would prefer a 5.0 to start with, but it seems like clean one's are diamonds in the rough, and they're always asking for more money than they'd be worth to me to just rip apart.

get a pinto and swing in a 460 then. Heads/cam/intake/carb/headers on a 460 you should run 10's on motor pretty cheaply, plus you get that pinto pimp factor.
might I suggest a yellow station wagon?

with 5.O's so cheap these days, you're better off just buying the V8 to begin with. A 4 cyl swap will nickle and dime you to death.

Thanks for the offer, but this who start up probably won't get started til spring. Time to start getting money together so I can get this done semi quick.

why not go to the E4TE 351W (-94-'96) if you're going to do the swap anyways? I mean should get you to your goals a little quicker.

it is better to do the swap because almost every 5.0 out there has been hacked apart. you don't need to change the k member! you don't have to do everything to do the v8 swap at once the brakes, rear end, springs, can wait all you have to do to get it in is engine mounts, the harness on the right side of the engine compartment that you should be able to change without taking out the dash, cluster, pcm, trans, (and pedals if you are going to change it from an auto to a stick, radiator, shroud, air intake, exhaust, and maybe a couple of little things i forgot, but these things are different in addition but don't need to be changed to get the motor in: master cylinder and brake booster assembly, front brakes not incluing the spindle, rear end, and springs.

i was under the impression that all you ford techs did in school was burnouts in oil with beaters... guess you guys actually had some classes too.

Pinto yes, but not wagon, it's all about the half glass.
