Any 8.8 ring/gear set should work. Explorers, f150, even some jeeps have the 8.8.
If you take more than the ring/pinion then it gets complicated with 28 vs 31 spline.
Also make sure you take the shims, you may need them because the 3.73 is thicker.

Never use used gears if possible. They are cheap enough to buy and set up properly they will live a long time.

Reason why he wants to take it out of a used car is because shimming it and all the crap you would go through to install brand new gears yourself is hard so getting a complete unit and straight installing it is easier

Just for the record whenever you install any gears in a different housing they have to be EXACTLY set up as the doner housing . Another words used gears are much harder to set up. New gears are not run in yet. You just cant change them around with out setting them up. New or old the procedure is the same but old gears are run in and have to be set exactly as the old unit they came from. So you need the setting numbers from the old housing and use the exact setting in the new housing you are putting them in. This is why so many gear changes i do in my shop are messed up by other shops or individuals is so profitable to me.Most people do not know how to set up gears . Either way you need specialized tools and knowledge of how to set them up. Bottom line new gears are easier to set up. Most gears give you pinion depth numbers as ball park. Ford gears do not. Most aftermarket gears give you pinion depth. But the 8.8 does not. So pattern setting is critical and back lash still has to be dun either way. And he will still have to crush a new sleeve either way so he has to set the gears up either way.If it a is cost issue i can understand that. Thanks!! alot of folks on here have run used gears with lil to no problems, used gears any dam gears all have to be shimmed or set up, no two houseing are the same. but as a shop its impossible to warranty some body's install with used stuff, so used gears go for 100 bucks, new is 70 bucks more, as a shop id almost pay the difference to 100 percent make sure the job goes with no hiccups long term. as a coustomer quit being cheap lol
