used ones are usually fine, due to the fact that it only spins half as fast (i.e. at 6k the crank turns at 6k but the cam is turning 3k) just check the lobes and mains for gouges, scoring, deep scratches, etc. and if you have a dial caliper or micrometer, check the mains for out-of-round (ovaled) but its rare i think
