sorry just seen you mentioned E-cam.

depends on gear and tire. I would say yes a small one would be in your best interest.
a tci saturday night special or tci breakaway with 3:55+ gears depending on your rear tire height. get a big trans cooler too. converter will cause more heat. you also need to ask yourself how much freeway driving you will be doing.

sorry to blow your post up but something to consider. not sure if by 1970 the changed the detent setup from the earlier setup. early stuff had an extra rod coming off the gas pedal assembly with a small cable to the trans either way starting in early 70s some cars had the rod which would still have to be converted. if you plan on going efi you will need to figure out your "kickdown" situation or go manual valvebody if using a C4. also dont forget you need this for that 50oz. motor:

well luckly 69&70's came with 9" rear ends and hopefully nobody has swapped that out. getting gears done or finding a "done" 3rd member should be easy. if your going to stick with that size tire for a bit 3:55's may be better for now. I know you said not much freeway driving but it really sucks going down the freeway with that short of tire and a lot of gear.

FYI I ran 3:55' with a locker when I had my 14's on my 67. I had a pretty nice C4 at the time with a TCI Breakaway and it would fry those little tires in first and second gear. I was running 235's at that time.

also If your car came with a tranny make sure its really is a C4. most 70's had FMX's transmissions and if it is an FMX, throw it away now!

about half way down you will see the I.D. for fords:
http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/wiki/Transmission_identification

stay away from the fmx and C3. if you happen to get a C5 no big deal its just a lock up converter version of the C4 although finding a converter will be difficult. the 70 and up C4 is suppose to be the better one with a better input shaft. If I remember right the 70 and up C4's had the dipstick in the pan and the earlier ones have it in the case.

I had a 68 C4 built pretty good and I beat it good and it lasted, Then the next owner put it behind a 347 and beat it and from what i heard the new owner has it behind a 351w and its still going strong with the same converter and trans cooler.

If you have to buy a c4, make sure its a case fill and NOT pan fill. this will make your life much easier. i would run a 28-3000 stall
It will really make it alot more fun light to light :-)

If running E303 with EFI setup with an automatic, you might have an idle problem, unless you get the converter right,

not sure what your budget is like, but this may be a better way to go:

http://www.californiafords.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=5;t=097992

if you spend $100 on a used tranny and then another 300 or so on converter your already halfway there on ^^^^.

quick google search found this write up:
http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/aod-into-mustang-54300.html

about 3rd post down dude did a whole write up. looks like the drive shaft will be okay with slight modification to the c4 yoke. a custom crossmember will have to be purchased but is only about $150. since you will be running the 5.0 efi you will be able to use a stock efi TV cable, brackets, flexplate, etc.

when looking stuff up for cougars its important to remember its almost a must when looking at parts. on the earlier models I know the cougar has about a 3" longer wheelbase so few things will change like length of leaf springs, subframe connectors etc. the front end is dead on like a mustang. just to give you few examples. if you cant find the answer your looking for when searching cougar try searching for mustang instead but keep an open mind cause a few things are different!

ok, think i might get one of those. i can get a complete one for a trade, so might be a better idea.

when i go to look at it, how would i be able to tell if its messed up or not?

drop the pan and check the fluid and see what the bottom of the pan is looking like. if you could afford it that one i posted a link on is worth it for sure! a stall alone will be $3-400 and if you have to get it rebuilt thats a whole other story and also you will need to do some valve body work right off the top because AOD's are turds in that area as well.
