I bought an AC Cobra kit car and the previous owner knew nothing about the car. It was probably built in the mid 90s. How can I tell if the motor is a 302 or a 351 Windsor and about what year it is? It's carburated, not fuel injected. I need to get new headers, sparkplug wires, and other parts for it. Are these and other engine parts interchangeable? Also I want to convert the mustang front end from 4 lug to 5 lug, can I just buy 5 lug discs or do I have to buy the whole spindles? Thanks, Jeff. without digging too deep into the motor or tring to get casting numbers.
what intake and how wide is it (the lower intake)
-------------------- It's NOT illegal. It's just frowned upon, like masturbating on an airplane.

Conversion discs will take care of the lug swap in front. A 351w will have a taller deck height, most easily noticable by the two extra 'webs' in the casting on the front of the block, between the timing case cover and the bottom of the intake.
Are you also asking which parts will swap from a 302 to a 351w? Which way are you trying to go?
The block casting date will be above the starter on the passenger side of the block, having a number and a letter together, i.e. D8, (1978). The letter is the decade, and the number is the last digit of the year of the casting. F for '90's, E for '80's, D for '70's, C for '60's, and so on.

Thanks for the info and suggestions guys. I'll check tomorrow. Phildog, I'm not really planning to swap parts. It's mostly for future reference, but right now I need to order some headers for it, so I'm wondering if I order headers for a 351 and it ends up being a 302, am I going to be stuck with the wrong headers? I'd also like to order some small items like sparkplug wires and wonder if I have to specify whether it's a 302 or a 351. I'm sure there will be other parts I'll get in the future. Thanks, Jeff.
