so i bought my car off of some dumbass tweakers who dont know shit about the car and wont answer my calls. it has a built 306 and runs good until about 4 grand when a nasty vibration kicks in. a buddy and i replaced the harmonic balancer with the correct 28oz, but its still there. now the previous owners mentioned that they "replaced the clutch" so i was hoping they threw the wrong flywheel on, but it appears to be stock. the only thing i can think of is the rotating assembly was balanced for a 50oz. any suggestions?

its not the driveshaft because the speed of the car doesent matter. it only does with the motor at about 4k. it will do on the driveway, but it does feel like some bad u joints

I recently had a similar problem with my '85 5.0 motor that some idiot put in my '65 Mustang.
If the block is newer than 1982 or so then it's a 50 oz motor, not a 28 oz. Pull out the starter and look at the numbers up above it toward the rear. This will tell you what year the block is. Hopefully the internal rotating assembly is right for the year of the block. You will need a harmonic balancer and flywheel that match eachother in weight once you find out what the motor is internally.
Mine had the wrong flywheel, a 28 oz instead of a 50. Once I replaced it no more vibration.
Good luck and I hope this helps.

A genuine '87 motor will have a number above the starter that starts with E7 and then two more numbers or letters after that. '77 will start with D7. Example; "E7OE" is for 1987 and "D70E" is for 1977.
The E is for the 1980's and D is for the 1970's.
A 1977 motor will have 28oz balance and a 1987 motor will have a 50 oz balance.
The transition point between 50 oz and 28 oz was in 1982.
Hope this answers your question.
