my '89 5.0 was stalling and dying at red lights and idle would go up and down. I read a post here on how to clean your IAC. I did that with carb cleaner and BAM____it worked perfect!!! No more dying at red lights. But now I have a new problem. I don't know if I introduced it or not. When I start to accellarate, car BUMPS in 1, 2, 3, and 4th real bad: BUMP_BUMP_BUMP_etc. I can only use maybe 1/4 peddle and have to baby it until I get enough speed up to put it in 5th. Don't really feel it in 5th but problem may be there also. Cruises down freeway fine at 60-80 (LOL)!!! Any ideas?? Does my '89 have the computer hookups to diagnose this problem?? TIA

thanks 89 I tried most of those things, but they seem to mostly deal with idle problems. I fixed the idle problem by cleaning the IAC, but now I have the acceleration problem. Could a bad IAC cause an acceleration problem. TIA jim

what kind of acceleration problem, if its not speeding up right or hesitating, it would probably be more a long the lines of a fuel issue. Bad filter, regulator, or even injectors.
I would go get a code scanner for $30 at kragen and pull some codes to see if the computer is throwing any errors.
Its really easy to get the codes and it could be easier then spending money replacing stuff.

well the accelaration problem is most likely your Throttle position sensor -located on your throttle body - on the website i sent you it has a section on how to set/test it. if it were me i always replace things as simple as that - then you know for sure it wasnt that part if it continues to fail - thus eliminating possiblities on what is causing it -

If you have a check engine light you can get your codes with a paper clip. And if no CEL you can use a circuit tester

Good point, dont even need to buy the scanner. But the ease of use, no mistakes on the codes, and the book that says what each one means is wirth the $$$
