so i replaced my head gasket put everything back together it was running kinda rough so i pulled all the plug wires and checked them i am getting a spark to all cylinders, also starter sounds perfectly normal and i still have plenty of fuel pressure...my tank is almost empty but im 99% sure that it has plenty...would i still have fuel pressure with no fuel? anyways i started it earlier and drove it a bit now i can get it to start at all checked to see if i was 180 off like 5 times i dont know what to do i have no more ideas!!!!!

Check your firing order. Make sure the wires are on the correct plugs.

Yeah, sounds kinda like a timing issue.

You know the distributor turns counter-clockwise right? You could have accidentally put the wires in reverse order.

ive seen that prob happen many many times. I know you said that youve checked timing and the wires and the rotation, but like everyone is saying-it sounds like timing. it seems like the fuel is loading up in the cylinders, then when the wrong timing comes around, it fires off and makes that LOUD ass bang . . . .right??

*also, why did you change the head gasket?? did it overheat? and no u shouldnt have fuel pressure if theres no fuel.

UPDATE PLEASE --rick

also, when you time it, you should only be able to see numbers. if you see letters, then you are a tooth off or 180 out, but either way-if you dont see numbers only when timing it, youre off --rick

i changed my head gasket cause i blew the metal ring part out the back of number 8, anyway i thought it was timing too but i checked and rechecked everything and its all in order... i set the timing with a light at 18 degrees and it was running ...not great but it was running, i timed it the same way i have always timed it and every other time it worked just fine...so what else could it be??

check compression values to verify if you have a lash problem. if your lash is to tight,a valve is partly open when should be closed thus no compression. [patriot]

would that cause it to not start at all?? I thought it would at least start... maybe when i drove it messed with the valves??? I dont know cause it started earlier and i didnt adjust anything other then plug wires i started it a few times to cycle the bad oil out, then started it and drove it around the block... i will recheck the lash though

well mustang298 posted that so i did that as best i could...but i already had it running and im sure i could have messed something up with that process below considering i have never done it but i did what he said...

1. Install all 16, and snug down the nut by hand

2. Rotate the engine until the balancer reads TDC on the compression stroke.

3. Check the rotor in the dist and verify that its pointing at the #1 wire at the cap. If its not rotate the engine 360 degrees.

4. with a 1/4" drive ratchet tighten the following rockers until you can't rotate(they begin to drag) the pushrod with your fingers(which is zero lash).

Cyl #1 intake /exhaust
cyl #3 exhaust
cyl #4 intake
cyl #7 exhaust
cyl #8 intake

5. Now tighten each of those an additional 3/4 turn beyond zero lash.

6. rotate the engine 360 degrees, so the balancer reads TDC again.

7. Do the same as above. tighten these rockers again to zero lash

cyl #3 intake
cyl #2 exhaust
Cyl #7 intake
cyl #6 exhaust

8. Now tighten them an additional 3/4 beyond zero lash

9. rotate the engine 90 degrees and tighten these to zero lash
cyl #2 intake
cyl #4 exhaust
cyl #5 intake and exhaust
cyl #6 intake
cyl #8 exhaust

10. now tighten those an additional 3/4 beyond zero lash

If you had both heads off check your grounds.

Injector harness ground and etc. They usually go on the back of cylinder heads (stock motor) one to injector harness and one to the firewall.

Also engine ground.

I just remembered when my '90 did that way back in the day. . . .and also, I remember just helping you with your intake gasket/vacuum leak. You might have more than one vacuum leak and double check to see if your mass air plug is plugged in. if you can, see how many volts youre getting to it --rick
