Author Topic: Got my clutch quadrant and firewall adjuster ...some problems

Well I got my firewall adjuster and clutch quadrant(both steeda) in. I also went and got a clutch cable from a parts dismantler since I heard oem cables work much better. However, when I put the cable and everything together the cable was kinda short. I had to use a prybar to get the cable on the clutch fork. The cable was on the closest hook to the firewall under the dash. I also have zero adjustment on the firewall adjuster. The clutch catches very high almost to where the pedal is all the way out. Im wondering If I did something wrong? I was told stock oem cables would work. Do I need to get an adjustable cable or what?

if the clutch isn't grabbing until the pedal is almost all the way up then you need to loosen the firewall adjuster a few turns.

I cannot move the firewall adjuster at all, clockwise or counter clockwise. It wont budge.

It seems like the cable was too short. I had to pull about an inch with a pry bar to get it on the fork. I think ill try a maximummotorsports cable since Ive heard they are a bit longer.

I had to use a pry bar to get my OE ford clutch cable on the bellhousing...

I have a 2 hook alum quadrent and a firewall adjuster with the stock cable, and it works great.

make sure when you installed the cable that the firewall adjuster was screwed in all the way / flush with the firewall mount, that's how I did mine then I just unscrewed it from the firewall so that like 3 threads are showing and it grabs about an inch off the floorboard.

If I remember right there is a rubber piece you need to take off along with 4 small plastic tabs at the top of the cable to make it slide in the adjuster. Look at the pic, thats what the top end of your cable should look like to slide into the firewall adjuster.

Im pretty sure I did it right. I took off the rubber parts and filed down the four nubs. I have firewall adjuster right up against the firewall. The only thing I can think of is maybe the cable being routed the wrong way? However I couldnt find any pics of it on the net.

Im not sure if the routing of the cable could be a problem? I found this picture on the net

This is supposed to be the correct routing.

However on my car I have it routed above the motor mount. Could that make such a big difference?

ARG I still have the same problem with my new cable. Im wondering if my clutch is too worn and the clutch fork is pulled to far back. Thus I cant get any slack in the cable...

it needs to be routed through the k member like that, or the clutch cable will be *really* stiff

Its routed just like. It seems as there isnt enough clutch cable slack. I still cannot move my firewall adjuster and it catches very high.

The clutch has plenty of grab left in it, if it was worn out it would slip at some point. I have a feeling the quadrant is installed wrong somehow. The first one I replaced, I installed it wrong because the instructions sucked and didnt list exactly how to do it. I also know there is a difference in the 95 and up kits. I dont know exactly whats different about it but they dont interchange. You could have gotten a missboxed unit too maybe. Again, I dont know if a 95 or newer quadrant would cause this problem... its just a thought.

The quadrant I have is listed for 82-04 years of mustangs. The fwa is 79-04 years mustang. I guess we can look at it tomorrow. I might have installed it wrong but I thought it would either go in one way or not at all...I guess i might have to go with an adjustable cable after all but hopefully not!

I just went to the steeda website and they dont show any difference for 95 up.

U kno what bro I have the exact same problem in my 96 cobra. Got the steeda set up as well. And no matter how I try 2 adjust it the thing still engages way 2 high. I had the same set up on my 86 but without the firewall adjuster and it worked good. I think I may just go back 2 that setup
