Could be a lot of different things. When was the last time you did a tune up? How many miles on the bottom end? AOD or 5-speed?

What do your plugs look like? Also, list all of the "supporting mods".

yeah that's really bad...my old 347 with 42' and spraying nitrous had way better gas mileage...

I think when you get a check engine light it also throws some type of thermactor code behind it which tends to dump more fuel...

check your plugs to see what they look like as well to make sure they're not fouled up.

fixing the engine codes will hlp I'm sure

Did you remove your smog equipment? If so I think you need to turn off the EGR with a chip [Confused]

Not 100% sure about this though

I think your right, when you start removing smog equipment the computer will do weird shit because it cant get a signal from those parts. What temp thermostat are you running? I had bad gas milage in my 88 LX because I was running a 160. The computer would never go into closed loop and run rich all the time. You need at least a 185 for it to run right.

I'm getting 8mpg and my 95 GT is almost dead stock. Only mods are:

Flowmaster cat-back
MSD 6AL
MSD Cap n' rotor
MSD Coil

I have replaced the plugs, plug wires, thermostat, air filter, cleaned the MAF, cleaned the TB, fuel filter, Techron fuel system cleaner, Gunk engine cleaner oil & oil filter. The car has 79,000 miles and an AODE.

The engine light is NOT on nor has ever come on. Timing is at 14*. So don't feel bad bro.

I was wondering the samething actually. I have a 98GT and the lady that had it before me swore it got 18-20mpg around town and since I have owned I get about 10mpg. The only mod I have is a
x-pipe but it also through the check engine light. So I thinking that it has to do with open loop. Would getting MIL's for the 2 rear O2 sensor help fix the light and gas millage?

I'm thinking about taking it to a Ford Dealership and having them run it on their diagnostic machine, because it's just stupid that it's getting such horrible gas mileage.

If you're actually getting that poor mileage at part-throttle then you MUST be running a very rich A/F at cruise.

The O2 sensors have complete control of the A/F at part throttle & idle. These are the only sensors that can affect A/F so drastically. The O2's can ONLY correct up to 25% (either way) from 14.7:1 A/F. Therefore if you're maff is WAY out of calibration your O2's may not be able to correct enough to bring the A/F in line. Or, if an injector is stuck open, the O2's can't do much about that either.

However....more comonly the problem is the O2 sensor heater circuit. If the O2's are properly warmed up, they read lean...which makes the computer automatically throw fuel at the engine.
I've seen internally grounded O2 sensors that have caused this problem. It can also be caused by other electrical issues.
On some cars the O2 heater circuit will blow a fuse & you can trace it that way. Others can be a little more tricky to pin-point.

First thing I would do is swap the O2's. If that doesn't work, I'd take it to a quality electrical shop.

I've seen this problem on half a dozen customers cars over the last 3 years.

What have been the electrical issues that you have dealt with? I am experiencing similar symptoms and I've replaced my 02s...

well before i was throwing smog pump, egr, o2 sensor, and MAF codes.... cleaned the MAF and got NEW Bosch sensors...

MAF and o2 codes went away...which leaves me with the other 2 codes....

for example last week i put 8 Gallons of gas in my car...and ide say about 70% of the time i kept the car under 3k RPM....ran it to the red....got 82 miles out of it...

So this is what a few guys from another board said may be the problem:

O2 Sensors: May be bad, replace'em!

Fuel Injectors: Probably need to be cleaned, one or more might be stuck open, may need to be replaced.

Fuel Pressure Regulator: May be; Leaking, Broke, or, if adjustable, may be set too high.

MAF: May be damaged for whatever reason.

well...

O2 Sensors: replaced about 5k miles ago when i did full tune up.

Fuel Injectors: have a total of 88k on them..when i changed manifolds i had the new rubber rings and tip kit...cleaned them with carb cleaner and a tooth brush.

Fuel Pressure Regulator: does NOT leak. holds the same pressure all the time....nothing funny going on. set @ 40 PSI(vaccum off)

MAF: NO MAF codes....i guess i could try a new MAF...thats all i can think of.....

I've seen internally grounded rear O2's that blow the circuit. On these cars since the rear O2's were not used (but plugged in) replacing the fronts did nothing.

Seen an internally grounded TPS that fried O2 heater circuitry in the computer.

Bad fuse panel.

Bad computer.

Bad 'crystal' (controls a LOT on newer cars).

Misc. blown circuits (other than sensors).

You really need to take it to a quality electrical shop. I learned a long time ago it's best to let a good shop (with the appropriate equipment) spend 1-2 hours fixing an electrical problem then throwing parts at the problem.

California Rewire has always come through for my customers. They are located in Sacramento off Sunrise Blvd & White Rock Rd. Near SacRaceway....~1.5 miles off Sunrise from Hwy 50.
