looking to beef up the rear end for as cheap as possible. dont mind the full lock rear end, but i was wondering exactly how the full spools work in regards to keeping the axles in place, ive got no experience with them

Unless it is a true track car with no street time, I wouldn't use a spool. A properly built Trac-Lok (31 spline) will do just fine. I've been running one in my Cobra for 2+ years now, no problems. A spool locks both axles together and does not "give" at all. It is very hard on tires, axles, and all other rear end components.

I hear a lot of people using full spools on the street without any problems. I do hear there is a more noticable tire wear but thats about it.
Otherwise speak to people that ACTUALLY do run there full spools on the street. Not from people that said i heard from this and that.

Have you ever driven it on the street? please explain what complications you had and how bad was it?
Im sure a bunch of us would be interested in hearing your expierence driving a full spool on the street along with myself. I hear people saying don't drive it on the street while others say its fine to drive a full spool on the street. Im stuck between the two.
Typically the ones that say don't drive a full spool on the street are people that never driven a full spool on the street. Whereas those that have driven full spools on the street says its fine.
Thats why Im more leaning towards full spool on the street is okay.

I've owned 3 cars with spools and installed countless mini-spools as well as full spools. The only difference being a mini-spool installs in the factory diff casing...and mini-spools are not for high HP use. The reason you do not want to drive one on the street is simple; if you hit a slick/wet/loose patch of pavement, the spool isn't going to release like a trac-lok or other diff will. You WILL trash the tires. Think about it; no matter how slow/fast you go around corners, the tires are turning at the same rate of speed. You cannot hang a corner or accelerate around one...you will lose control quite easily. Spools are for straight line or off-road (read: 4 wheeling) use. People buy spools thinking they need it for a street car. Not hardly. They are not for the street.
Want a cheap upgrade? Buy a used 31 spline Trac-Lok. Buy a rebuild kit. And a set of 31 spline axles. You will be just fine with that combo.

I have a spool in my car and drive in on the street sometimes. I can care less about tire wear because it isn't a daily driver more like a monthly driver

ive driven in cars with welded diffs, and have numerous friends who own welded cars (they drift). i need a rear end capabe of handling 500/500 to the point where i will not have to worry about losing an entire wheel and killing myself. i know HOW full spools work and they are pretty much the route i want to take, as it will be an occasionally driven car. i want to know what is involved in installing one and how the axles are secured without c clips

yep from what i been reading if your car has skinnies and will never take a corner fast then its perfectly fine to run a full spool.

They can be run with or without C clips. You can use them, especially with mini-spools. Normally, C-clip eliminators are used with a spool. The axle tube needs to be modified as well as c-clip eliminator specific axles being used.
For what it's worth, my Cobra is laying down 715/744 rear wheel with a Lightning trak-loc and 31 spline axles...and yes, it's run on slicks.

interesting, would an exploder unit from the junkyard suffice after a rebuild?
