I'am thinking about getting the BBK SSI manifold for my 87 5.0 and was wondering if anybody has it, or has an opinion about it.

is your car still speed density or did you convert to mass air? if its speed density it wont do any good. if its mass air it will be a good upgrade. supposed to be a very good street intake similar to the performer.

The new 5.0 magazine had an artical about the 5 intakes. It rated the BBK SSI and the GT 40 as lower performance intakes. The Trickflow track heat is very affordable and is also a very good intake. The Holley systemax is very similar to the trickflow, but more pricy. The Edelbrock performer RPM 2 was rated the best. They dynoed one engine with each manifold and the edelbrock kept making horsepower even at high rpm's. The trickflow and holley start dropping off at high rpm. Im getting an RPM 2 this week. But the SSI is better for the street, and lower rpm's. So if you dont race much go for it! But remember the RPM 2 is about the same price.

Iam going for a street/strip car but if its only good for low rpms its pretty much a waste iam looking for alround performance not 2nd best so i'll probably look into the edlebrock. Why not do it right the first time. Thanks for the info.

decent info. but a little off. the rpm 2 and systemax 2 is more for a power adder. a very good setup is:
edelbrock performer intake TFS stage 1 cam AFR 165 heads
also the track heat is up there with the systemax and rpm 2.

We made decent power with a ported RPM 2 (388RWHP N/A 319ci), but ditched it in favor of a Victor EFI due to the restrictive upper intake design on the RPM 2. Boost is needed to push by the restriction in the upper....so I sold the intake to a boosted buddy.
All the ford EFI intakes listed are restrictive in the uppers compared to a Carburator setup. Find the intake that has the correct cross-sectional area & runner length for your application & that's about as good as you can get. Personally I prefer the Edelbrock line. Proven quality, proven performance. BBK SSI has the most restrictive upper intake of all the intakes listed....& that is why it doesn't make as much power as the others at RPM...too many turns. The less turns the airflow must follow, the less restrictive the design, the more power it'll make.
Less restrictive designs: TFS Box: Too bad it's WAY too large for most applications. Edelbrock Super Victor EFI: Carburated converted to EFI. Again, too large for most applications + a very short runner.

very good info. but way off of what he is trying to accomplish. a big intake will do him no good with box stock heads and a mild cam. but very good info. none the less.

Probably some matching edelbrock heads. Your going to have to switch to mass air though, especially if you get a cam. If it was me, I would get a big COMP cam. What are you doing with the bottom end?

So what intake manifolds do you recommend for 302 boosted applications?
TFS Box Hogan Sheet metal Intake RPM II
Doesn't the Victor 5.0 have larger, shorter runners as well? Why isn't this good for boost?

The same holds true for boosted applications. The straighter the shot at the valve, the more power it'll make. Also take into account that a blower artificially extends the powerband of a given application by a few hundred RPM (due to boost increasing with RPM), therefore your best bet for the most average power is to buy a manifold with a slightly longer runner then the desired RPM band for the application.
The Victor is fine for boost....as is any manifold. In fact, the pressure helps push the airflow past the intake restrictions. Still, the Victor has a 180 degree turn in the upper which is most definately a restriction....especially at RPM. A Box or Carb style with elbow will make more power then a Victor if matched correctly to the combination.
I'm currently working on a modification to the VictorEFI on my wife's GT. The modification involves turning the upper manifold around & attaching a TB onto the plenum which would efectively eliminate the biggest restriction in the Victor EFI (180 degree turn). I'll post up the results once I finish the project.
