Well i'm a new member here and i need a little help. My girlfriend has a 1965 6 cylinder mustang. Its been sitting for the past 5 years because she said that the transmission was slipping and there was a loud "glass breaking sound" coming from the engine. So i came along and checked it out. When i first tried to start it, the loud glass sound was coming from the starter. I took it out and saw that most of the teeth were gone. I replaced the starter and tried to start it again. As soon as it clicked over, the starter stuck on. After that, there was a leak in the transmission. I figured the solenoid was bad also and thats why the starter stuck on. Changed that too. I checked the oil and it was old but it was there. Put some gas in the carb and tried to start it. After a few tries it started. It idled ok, but it did sound that like it needs a head work. We put the car in drive and it sounded like there was something bouncing around inside the transmission. That sounded like glass breaking. So after another minute, the motor died. Couldn't even get it to turn over anymore.

So my questions are:
1. If the old starter was missing teeth, can it be possible for them to be floating around in the flywheel area?
2. Can the the flywheel seize and keep the motor from turning over?
3. Does anyone have a working Automatic trans. for a 6cyl or does anyone know where a cheap place in the bay area is that i can get this one rebuilt?

Thanks alot guys, hope to get some help here.

Sitting for 5 years means the gas and oil are useless liquids right now. The "glass breaking" was probably the lack of lubrication on the top end since it basically started with metal-to-metal contact.

Without priming the engine with oil, you basically did a dry start on your 40-year old engine with 5 year old oil (sludge).

If it sat outside, expect a lot of seals to be shot as wel.

1. Yes
2. Not really. It's more possible that when you shifted it into drive the tranny didn't have enough life to shift back into neutral, thus not cranking over again.
3. Post here on "Ford Sale" then check your yellow pages for engine shops.

How do you prime the engine oil? Before the initial start, i cranked the engine over a few times. Then i took the valve cover off and just took a quick look at everything and it all looked ok and there was oil over everything. I know i probably should've been more careful with things, but i think we're gonna get the motor re-built anyway or get a new one. So i just wanted to see if i could atleast get it stared yesterday. Thanks.

to prime you would remove the distributor and get a adapter to use a power drill to turn the oil pump.

right now since it wont crank I would recommend using a deep socket and a breaker bar on the crankpulley and rotate the engine by hand to make sure nothing is jammed up.
