Okay, got everything back in the car (stock longblock/t5) and the motor wouldn't turn over at all. Pulled the trans, motor turned about 1/6th of a turn, took off bell, clutch, flywheel, etc, no change.
I was able to rotate the motor when it was out of the car, but ironically, just the way it sits now.
I have absolutely no idea what the hell is going on here. I tried to keep turning it and ended up breaking two 3/8" to 1/2" adapters and a 3/8" ratchet, so i'm pretty sure it's not gonna budge
what in the hell could keep the thing from turning over completely? i never attempted to start it, i just figured out the issue when trying to set the timing.
Any guesses or advice would be awesome . . .
Thanks, Phil

How are you turning it over by hand? If the starter and transmission are off, the motor should turn over freely, just like it did when it was out of the car. Is anything on there now that wasnt before? Is the belt on or off? PM me if you need some suggestions...
By the way, we got that TKO in and it works great. As for our Explorer....its not looking good

Good to hear about the trans, Steve.
The motor SHOULD turn freely, but does so for only 1/6" of a rotation. The accessory belt has been removed also, just to rule out another possibility.
As far as I can remember, there is now nothing installed on the motor that was not on it when it was out of the car.
I can't honestly remember whether or not I tried to rotate it after I put on the oilpan, not that that should have any bearing on the situation . . .
Thanks, Phil

I'm not really sure who Steve is...
Tommy bought your TKO, Chris bought your heads, and my name is Brandon...
Anyway, Would it turn more than 1/6 when it was out of the car? And like i asked before, what are you turning it over by?

sorry, Brandon!!
I was mixed up with all the new names. Either way . . . I am turning the motor over by the balancer bolt, and when it was out of the car I *believe* I was able to turn it more than just a little bit.

Did you change the cam? If so, are you sure it's installed correctly?

didn't mess with the cam at all. I doubt this matter but i just thought of it - there was a metal bracket-looking thing off of the end of the cam, so I took it off so it'd fit under the 94/95 timing cover, then torqued the cam bolt back down.
Would that have anything to do with it at all?

Ouch. I think it's gonna have to come back out, too. Did you put on an oil pump? It could be interference there (although it shouldn't be) I think you could FORCE the crank to spin past the pan if it was the pan, but maybe that too. Also, some balancers and the 94-95 timing cover don't match upnicely, so maybe look there. Otherwise, I think some foreign object made it's way in there, and has lodged in an unfortunate (or fortunate, cause better now than when you try to start it) spot and is preventing the engine from turning.

You can pull the valve covers and timing chain cover in the car. I once had a nut find it's way between the timing chain and gear. Popped the chain, then bent some valves w/ the starter. Good luck.

did you pull the rod caps off at any point? I've seen guys assemble an engine and not pay attention to which way the rods/caps go on. They are chafered on one side to clear the radius on the crank journals and straight cut onthe other where they meet their neighbor. Install them backwards and the motor will bind. Just a thought.
