Okay my friend has a 93 caprice ls. 5.7L. Last night the car began having problems it would not go backwars and it would make a loud noise like "metal crusing" it would also do it on drive yet we managed to take it home like that. we think it has something to do with the rear end giving up, treaking etc. the Diff? i dunno any suggestions?.Do we have to get the parts of the same type of car or could we swap the parts from a different one?
which other cars?
thanks

just look underneath the car when trying to get it to move forward or backward, if the driveshaft is still spinning then something in the rear diff is broke, most likely the spiders like mentioned previously. That car has the chevy 8.5" rear so any vehicle with that diff should work being around the same year.

spider gears are right in the middle of the carrier, see the yellow springs in this picure. This has posi so it has those springs, but all spider gears reside in there, pics speak a thousand words, eh.
