My batt died but it was because i left my dome light on ...then i charge the batt for a little bit..it turns on but i thaught my alt was going out so i disconnect my neg batt cable and the car shut off....i try to start it again and it would just click rapidly several times then not click at all. Also when the car was on earlier i looked at the volt guage and it would no go up even if i gave it gas....Is it time for a new alt?

Have a digital voltmeter? Put it on the terminals and read the voltage w/ the car off. Fire it up and then read it. Should be 12V w/ car off. Should be 13-14V at idle. Turn on your headlights on highbeam and your A/C. Voltage should not drop below 12.5V at idle, and gho up as the rpms go up. If your Volts drop w/ more load and don't stay above 12 even with more RPM, the Alt is probably bad.
