Yesterday I was driving, and It sounded almost like a miss (?) the rpms were at about 1500, and with my foot not giving or taking any gas away, the rpms started to go up and and down, about 100rpms or so... I figrued that it may be my distributor cap, since it has a lost of miles on it, and I had planned on changing it the following day....

well I was driving to work last night, it did the above problem again! so I turned off the OD, and the rpms began to fluctuate again, but at a larger scale, say about 500rpms up and down. I clicked the OD on again, with the same results. when I coasted to a stop, I tried reving the car in neutral to 3000rpm, and it did it again.

I decieded that I should drive home and swap to my truck, when the light turned green, I gently pressed the gas pedal and, it happened again, this time in drive, I gave it some gas, and the car sputtered (with the same 500rpm flux) and backfired once and then died. I tried to start it again to no avail. [Frown] I parked it and decided to try again in the morning.

This morning, I tried starting it again, and it ran poorly again, with the sputtering. I went to autozone, and bought new distro cap, rotor, and coil, and that didnt solve it either. I did swap the stocker back in just for kicks with no success.

The car sounds like it wants to turn over, but wont. When the tow truck diver saw me start it, he told me that a light black puff of smoke came out the exhaust (o/r x, 3chambers dumped) and suggested that its fuel related.

I replaced the stock fuel pump about 8 months ago with a 255lph walboro, and replaced the fuel filter the same week. Ive been running either am/pm 89 octane, or chevron 89 for months.

any and all tips are welcome and appreciated!!!!!

This probably isn't your problem but you never know. My car did the same thing and i ran a codes test and it told me there wasn't enough signal from the MAF, i took that a part and found that there was two rubber gaskets for the connector and it wouldn't snap together properly. So maybe some idiot put another rubber gasket on your connector?

you'll probably have to run the engine off codes. i had a similar problem when my ect sensor went bad. you might also want to try resetting the timing, 94/95's sometimes reset themselves

A buddy of mine had a 95GT that had a similar problem and he eventually traced it to his MAP sensor I think..... [Confused]

but would that stop it from starting?
EDIT:
I just went outside, and it started, but the idle was at about 250+/- 100

Ok, I just pulled the codes and was given:
theses were in contious memory.
211, 212, 211, 212
I read that 211 = Profile Ignition Pickup (PIP) circuit failure.
and that 212 = Loss of ignition diagnostic monitor signal/ SPOUT circuit grounded.

the pip is inside the distributor, its a pain to change and you're better off with a new one. there could also be a bad connection somewhere around the dist or spout

Actually, i swapped in a new ICM (ignition control module, and it seemed to run allright, I just have to get an appropriate socket to install it correctly and give it a proper break-in period.
