I did a compression test on my fox today just for heck of it before I start putting more money into performance parts.
ALL the cylinders were 130 psi @ 3 revulotions and 150psi with 4.
Freakin car has 150K miles man. Blows no smoke runs nice.
I love 5.0's.

that's pretty low unless it has a cam with some overlap in it...
how many times did you turn it over? once? twice?
for instance you might get ~130 on the 2nd rotation but it should go up a bit each time until maybe 7 or 8 revolutions...

Oh yeah you want to turn it over as many times as it takes for the needle to stop going up. 150 psi is average to a touch below average for a car with a lot of miles on it.

What do re-ringed/re-freshed engines get? Does it depend on the compression ratio?

All your plugs were out and it was WOT, right?...
If all the cylinders were really that close in PSI, then I'd say those numbers ROCK!...

ah shit....
no plugs were in and it was not at WOT.
I only let the needle kit 3 clicks and on every single one it hit 130psi but on the 4th click 150.

Depends on the motor compression ratio and also the size of the head chambers

I'm assuming this is on your '90 with stock shortblock and stock heads? If all the #'s are within a few psi that means the motor is in decent shape mechanically. If you see more than a few psi difference than there may be an issue in the hole that carries different numbers. Holding the throttle blade to WOT makes a tiny difference but not really worth mentioning. Its also a requirement to run the test on a motor that isn't cold. Just hot enough where you can still get your hands in there without burning yourself. This insures a true compression reading as we all know metal things change under heat. If you end up with 150 psi I wouldn't throw the motor out. It's just a touch low. [ April 15, 2004, 12:38 AM: Message edited by: mtbaughs ]

Yeah the motor was warm. I drove it about 7 miles in traffic.
Yeah but the thing is I only stoped at 3 revolutions not until the needle stopped pulling up. LIKE I HAVE ALWAYS DONE.
I was listening to someone else today where I did the compression test.
Or do you think thats good enough results that the motor is good and ready for a few mods?
Also what oil do you recomend? 10-40? or 10-30 and 1 quart of 30.

Nope I always spin the motor until the highest reading is achieved. Usually with a battery charger on it as a low battery will affect readings to an extent. Also I spin it electronically with the starter motor. On performance pushrod cars I always run synthetic 20/50 weight oil. I like Amsoil the best but its not always easy to come by. I wouldn't let a 150 psi reading keep me from modifying the car. I'd just run a set of 58cc AFR's to raise it up a bit.

So I should do it over till the needle tops off and with all the spark plugs removed.

Depends on what your objective is. If you want to determine the exact psi I would

As always your right car is running nice no problems.
No reason to worry about it then.
Time for a few bolt on's.
Later will be time for a 347 or low compression 306 and a blower.
