which should I use for my Tbird? I need low end power to get the fat car moving, so which is better for that?

the b is a dog until higher rpm's, go with the e unless you plan to drag it, then go with a x or f.

so getting a B and either advancing or retarding it 4* (forget which does what) won't make any diff? I guess I've been searching for the wrong cam [Mad]

make sure you bump the stall up a bit (if you haven't already) auto's can make a hotter cam a royal PITA because of reduced bottom end (e.g. below 2000 rpms you are in a world of hurt)

why does it have to be a B or E cam ? neither one is going to help your low end power. they are both going to take some away. If you don't have gears I would start with those. If you do go with a E-cam advance it at least 4 degrees.

cuz I'm not building a rear end, I'm building an engine. and I have a 7.5" open rear, and from what I've heard it's worthless to try to upgrade it at all, so I'm stuck with it until I have tons of money to change it. I only work 20 hrs a week at minimum wage and have other things to take my money from me too. Unless other people tell me that my rear end would survive gears, i'm stuck with it.

I would look into getting a 8.8 rear from a turbo coupe before doing ANY engine work. A lower gear ratio is the easiest way to wake up a heavy car. There are usually some turbo coupes in one of the pick and pull yards here in Sacto, so Fresno shouldn't be much different. The cost to swap in an 8.8 is cheaper than you might think.

I think I've found one before, but it wasn't the right kind (didn't have the right rear in it).

how easy/difficult is the swap? as in 1-10, 1=changing spark plugs, 10=rebuild a tranny?

well back on topic...

I'm putting this engine together to have something to build on. I don't have the time or money to upgrade everything at once (tranny stall, rear end, etc.). I'm porting my heads myself, then going to get a valve job for them. Still don't know about different valves or springs, depends on price. other than that and the cam, pretty much everything else is stock. now I know some of you guys will tell me I "need" a different intake or so on, but this is going in my Tbird, my daily driver, and is going to be a gradual project.

Having said that, it seems that the B isn't well suited to my situation. most say that it has poor torque compared to the E, and I think I need more low and mid power since my car is heavier. So does anyone want to trade their E cam for a B I just got from ebay? [Roll Eyes] And advancing the cam moves the power band lower, right? and is advancing the cam is as easy as just using one of the other keyways on the timing gears, or do you have to use the whole timing wheel thing?

i just looked at the link u posted about the turbo coupe rear, u dont need 95% of that brake stuff, i have all of it for my cobra because i did a disk swap in the rear, but i just said the hell with it, used a stock style master cylinder and no proportioning valve, and the brakes work great, i have a pro.. valve and a new master that is for the disk rear but i dont need them, why change something that works fine

Might as well port your intake too. If you can't find someone to trade you that bcam I say just fuck it and stick that bitch in there. Learning from experience is the best part. Who knows you might like it and your shit will sound mean as fuck. FUCK IT!!! [burnout] [burnout] [patriot]

ya I was thinking of just saying "fuck it" and putting it in, but I don't want my daily driver running like shit til I have time to tear down the front of the engine and swap cams

running a b or e cam in a auto car with a stock convertor and a rear end with 2.73s or 3.08s will slow you down a fair amount I'm afraid.

stock cam and 4.10s man [Razz]

agree on the turbocoupe idea, find the one with 3.73s (I have one with a broken axle, but am keeping it)

you say slow me down, but remember, the engine in it right now has a whole 160hp, 280tq. I doubt a rebuilt HO with worked heads and a cam will be much slower than that [Razz]
